Professional Certificate in Accounting Operations: Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Reconciliation
Build the practical capability to move supplier invoices, customer balances, cash receipts and reconciliation differences from source evidence to a clear, review-ready accounting record. This online professional certificate develops the connected working methods used by Accounts Payable and Receivable Specialists across daily operations and month-end close.
Across four modules and twenty applied lessons, you will practise one end-to-end fictional company case and produce twenty reusable professional artifacts. You will learn how to validate records, match transactions, explain differences, maintain visible exception queues and prepare a disciplined close handoff while keeping approvals and consequential financial decisions with the authorised people.

Applied learning through a connected accounting-operations case
The course follows Northbridge Services, a fictional multi-entity services company, through routine transaction work and a demanding month-end close. The case develops from basic source-document and responsibility mapping into supplier invoices, matching, customer billing, receipt application, ageing, bank movements, control accounts and close review.
Every lesson teaches one workplace capability and one distinct professional artifact. Each artifact includes a usable blank template, a completed fictional example, quality checks and guided AI Practice. AI can help organise supplied facts, compare fields, recalculate figures and critique a draft; the learner verifies every retained fact, calculation, explanation and action.
The separate capstone uses a new fictional services company and a bounded evidence pack. It asks the learner to reconcile the reported position, preserve unresolved items and communicate a review-ready close handoff in one coherent memo.
Curriculum
Module 1 - Foundations of Controlled Accounting Operations
Understand how transaction-accounting work moves from source evidence to open items, subledgers and control accounts, and establish the disciplines that make the work reviewable.
- Operate the AP/AR role across daily, weekly and month-end work — create an AP/AR Operating Rhythm and Responsibility Map.
- Connect source documents, transaction logic, subledgers and control accounts — create a Transaction Reasoning Worksheet.
- Check master data and route change requests safely — create a Master-Data Verification and Change-Referral Checklist.
- Apply transaction controls and escalate warning signs safely — create a Control and Safe-Escalation Map.
- Build a controlled accounting workpaper — create a Controlled Accounting Workpaper Template.
Module 2 - Accounts Payable Operations
Follow a supplier invoice through intake, duplicate testing, matching, coding support, approval routing, exception handling, statement reconciliation and AP close.
- Validate invoice intake and test for duplicates — create an Invoice Intake and Duplicate-Test Log.
- Match purchase orders, receipts and invoices — create a Three-Way Match and Coding Worksheet.
- Route AP exceptions and approval requests — create an AP Exception and Approval-Routing Record.
- Reconcile supplier statements and prepare payment-readiness support — create a Supplier Statement and Payment-Readiness Reconciliation.
- Prepare the AP ageing and close schedule — create an AP Ageing and Close Schedule.
Module 3 - Accounts Receivable Operations
Move from an approved billing request to an accurate customer open item, statement, ageing view, receipt batch and supported customer-level reconciliation.
- Issue accurate invoices from approved billing requests — create a Billing Request and Invoice Quality Checklist.
- Organize customer statements, ageing and action queues — create a Customer Statement, Ageing and Action Queue.
- Control receipt batches and apply cash — create a Cash Receipt and Application Worksheet.

Module 4 - Reconciliation, Month-End and Better Operations
Connect AP and AR records with bank activity and general-ledger controls, roll forward open differences and turn close evidence into a repeatable operating rhythm.
- Prepare a bank reconciliation with controlled matching — create a Bank Reconciliation Workpaper.
- Roll forward reconciling items and analyse ledger breaks — create a Reconciling-Item Rollforward and Break Analysis.
- Coordinate month-end evidence and reviewer handoff — create a Month-End Close Handoff Schedule.
- Use metrics and root-cause analysis to improve accounting operations — create an Accounting Operations Improvement Brief.
- Use AI to review exceptions with human verification — create an AI Prompt, Output and Verification Record.
Applied Capstone - Month-End Reconciliation and Close Handoff
Work with a new fictional services-company evidence pack containing an approved procedure summary, supplier and customer records, AP and AR close outputs, receipt and bank activity, control balances and reviewer questions.
Explain the reconciled position, retain every unresolved difference and submit one Month-End Reconciliation and Close Handoff Memo. The capstone is individual and self-paced. You may reuse relevant course methods, but you do not need to assemble or audit the twenty lesson artifacts.
How the course works
The course is 100% online and self-paced. It can be completed within one month, depending on your study pace and the depth of your practical assignments.
Lessons move from plain-language explanation to a practical method, worked example, blank template, guided AI Practice, human verification and independent transfer. Manual completion controls let you progress at your own pace while preserving a clear route to the final certificate section.
AI-supported practice and self-assessment
AI Practice is model-agnostic and source-bound. It can help organise approved inputs, compare records, recalculate supplied figures, identify missing evidence and critique a draft. You remain responsible for checking sources, dates, balances, calculations, confidentiality, workflow status and professional communication.
Each lesson provides observable quality checks and formative feedback guidance. The capstone includes a 100% rubric, self-assessment threshold and critical-failure checks for balance integrity, unsupported corrections, hidden unresolved items and unclear ownership.
Certificate
After completing the required learning-platform activities, learners can access the MTF Institute course-completion certificate and MTF Student ID from the final course section. The certificate uses the title Professional Certificate in Accounting Operations: Accounts Payable, Accounts Receivable and Reconciliation.
