Curriculum
Four modules. Twenty applied lessons.
Start the Client Relationship
A lead can arrive with a name, a number and an urgent request, but that is not enough to begin a sales conversation. First identify the type of request, check your role and the approved contact route, and decide what you can do now.
01 Know Your Role Before You Act
Check a supplied case against your current role, line, state and employer permissions, then choose a permitted first action or named verification route.
Five practical steps
- Check case date and state
- identify product line and requested step
- inspect supplied license, appointment, delegation and local procedure
- mark permitted intake separately from regulated work
- name the person who verifies an unknown step
Primary deliverable: case-specific role-permission decision map.
02 Triage an Assigned Inquiry
Classify an incoming inquiry, its urgency and due time, then route it internally before any unverified contact.
Five practical steps
- Read the request without assuming its purpose
- classify sales, service, complaint or urgent issue
- identify supplied deadlines
- check recorded permission and opt-out flag
- choose internal first action and owner
Primary deliverable: intake triage decision card.
03 Plan a Permitted Prospect Contact
Decide whether and how to approach a supplied lead using recorded permission and the employer's current approved channel rules.
Five practical steps
- Identify lead source
- read recorded permission and opt-out evidence
- compare the employer-supplied channel rule
- decide contact or no contact
- record the reason and compliance referral where unclear
Primary deliverable: permission-aware contact plan.
04 Discover the Client's Needs
Use open questions and accurate restatement to record the client's concern, known facts, preferences and missing information before any product match.
Five practical steps
- Open with the client's reason for asking
- ask one relevant open question at a time
- reflect the answer without changing it
- separate fact, preference and inference
- identify the next missing fact
Primary deliverable: needs-discovery record.
05 Keep a Reliable Client Case Record
Record dated interactions, current sources, open questions, corrections and accountable next actions in an approved system.
Five practical steps
- Capture each dated interaction
- distinguish client statement from verified source
- record source date and status
- assign open question, owner and due time
- correct an error under local rules
Primary deliverable: durable client case record.
Discuss Policies and Options with Care
A client may use the word coverage when pointing to a marketing page, a quote or an issued policy. Those sources answer different questions. Before explaining a term, establish which document is current and whether your role permits that exact client-facing statement.
06 Explain a Current Policy Source
Verify authority and document status before giving a plain-language, source-attributed fact or routing an unresolved policy question.
Five practical steps
- Identify the case date and current policy document
- Verify dated state, line, role, license, appointment/delegation, employer/carrier permission and approved channel for the exact external explanation
- Separate source-backed fact from interpretation
- If permitted, explain only the sourced fact plainly; otherwise retain an internal summary without external assurance
- Obtain accepted qualified-owner handoff for uncertainty and set a permitted client-update time
Primary deliverable: source-backed coverage explanation sheet.
07 Prepare a Quote Request Without Overstating It
Gather current inputs for an authorized quote owner and distinguish a prepared request from an issued, approved or expired quote.
Five practical steps
- Collect current client inputs and mark missing facts
- Check state, product line, case date and any expired or superseded quote
- Verify dated role, license, appointment/delegation and employer/carrier permission separately for quote generation, submission and client communication
- Prepare and label an internal request unless each exact external step is permitted; never describe it as an approved quote
- Obtain accepted authorized quote-owner handoff, review status and permitted client update
Primary deliverable: quote-request packet.
08 Compare Verified Option Facts
Create a factual comparison from current sources and decide whether this worker may discuss it externally; route any recommendation to a verified producer.
Five practical steps
- Restate the client's comparison criteria
- Verify current source, version and date for each factual option
- Check dated state, line, role, license, appointment/delegation, employer permission and approved channel for any external option discussion
- Compare like facts internally when external authority is unknown; if verified, discuss only those sourced facts
- Route a product-specific recommendation to an accepted qualified producer
Primary deliverable: factual option-comparison worksheet.
09 Explain Value in the Client's Terms
When case-specific permission is verified, connect a current sourced feature to the client's priority and test understanding; otherwise keep a draft internal and route the question.
Five practical steps
- Recall the client's stated priority and ordinary price question
- Verify current source, version and exact feature fact
- Check dated state, line, role, license, appointment/delegation, employer permission and approved channel before any client-facing value or term explanation
- If permitted, explain sourced value and ask for teach-back; otherwise hold the draft internally with no external assurance
- Obtain accepted qualified-owner review for the held branch and set a permitted process update
Primary deliverable: client-priority value explanation note.
10 Request an Authorized Decision
Acknowledge a disputed or recommendation-level question, send a precise decision request to the proper human owner and commit to an update.
Five practical steps
- Listen and restate the exact concern
- Identify source conflict or missing fact
- Verify who may decide and send the qualified-owner request
- Record the owner's acceptance and due answer
- Give only a permitted process update through the approved channel, without an independent policy-term answer
Primary deliverable: licensed/supervisory decision request.
Move Work Forward and Serve Existing Clients
A client choice is the beginning of a process, not proof that an application was approved or a policy is active. You will learn to label each stage accurately, name the person responsible for the next decision and tell the client what happens next.
11 Record the Authorized Next Step
Translate a client choice into the next approved action while keeping proposed, submitted, approved, bound and issued states distinct.
Five practical steps
- Confirm the client's choice and current stage
- Verify dated case role, line, license, appointment/delegation, employer permission and approved channel for the next action and any status message
- Name the authorized producer or carrier step
- Label proposed, submitted, approved, bound or issued only from confirmed evidence
- Communicate only the confirmed stage through the permitted channel and record owner and next action
Primary deliverable: authorized next-step checklist.
12 Keep a Follow-Up Promise
Track a promised answer through actual client update or accepted reassignment, including the revised commitment when work remains open.
Five practical steps
- Record promised channel and time
- monitor the decision owner
- give an approved-channel update
- verify whether reassignment was accepted
- record actual contact and any revised promise
Primary deliverable: follow-up commitment tracker.
13 Prioritize Your Open Cases
Use an approved view of your own assigned opportunities to find due actions, stale sources and owner gaps under supplied local targets.
Five practical steps
- Open own assigned queue
- check status and source date
- rank due actions using local priorities
- flag stale or unowned exceptions
- plan next action without treating activity target as a sale
Primary deliverable: own-case pipeline exception view.
14 Respond to an Existing Client's Service Request
Verify the requester and current source, prepare a factual approved-channel response and route policy changes or claims decisions to an authorized owner.
Five practical steps
- Verify requester and approved channel
- Classify service, change or claim question
- Check current policy source/date and dated role, line, license, appointment/delegation and employer permission for the exact process or policy statement
- Draft only permitted confirmed facts; keep any unauthorized coverage or claim wording unsent
- Obtain accepted qualified-owner route and record sent or unsent status
Primary deliverable: service-response draft.
15 Prepare a Renewal Case Before the Deadline
Use the client's current notice and policy to identify changed facts, deadline and decision owner, then record a factual update.
Five practical steps
- Read current renewal notice and policy dates
- Ask what changed for the client and identify deadline
- Check dated role, line, license, appointment/delegation, employer permission and approved channel for any renewal update
- Prepare the case for the local qualified renewal owner and obtain acceptance
- Communicate only permitted notice facts and process status, never predict the renewal decision
Primary deliverable: renewal-preparation record.
Resolve Exceptions and Adapt Your Practice
Some questions cannot be answered safely from the information or authority available to the first person who receives them. A good handoff gives the qualified colleague the exact question, relevant source and deadline, and confirms that someone has accepted ownership.
16 Make a Handoff That Is Accepted
Transfer a consequential case question with minimum necessary facts, a named qualified recipient, acceptance evidence and a continuing client update plan.
Five practical steps
- Define the exact decision needed
- gather dated source and relevant facts
- choose qualified owner
- confirm receipt and acceptance
- retain the next client-update commitment
Primary deliverable: accepted decision handoff memo.
17 Escalate an Exception Safely
Recognize a complaint, suspected error, privacy concern or urgent gap and follow the supplied local route while preserving facts and avoiding an unauthorized remedy.
Five practical steps
- Classify the exception and urgency
- preserve the exact timeline and source
- use the employer-supplied escalation route
- disclose only permitted facts
- record owner acceptance and safe client update
Primary deliverable: local-exception escalation view.
18 Review a Client Message Before Release
Produce a source-checked client draft and human release note, with the same completed work product whether AI assistance is approved or unavailable.
Five practical steps
- Check approved channel, permitted data and current source
- Verify dated case state, line, role, license, appointment/delegation and employer/carrier permission for the exact message and reviewer/sender
- Draft manually or with an employer-approved AI tool using permitted data only
- Verify and correct every material claim; keep restricted wording unsent and route it to a qualified owner
- Obtain human release for the permitted message and record sent or unsent status
Primary deliverable: source-checked client message draft with human review and release note.
19 Correct Your Own Case Exceptions
Review your assigned due cases for stale sources, missed promises or owner gaps and correct what your role permits under local rules.
Five practical steps
- Review own due items
- identify source, authority or promise defect
- correct an entry within role
- refer any decision beyond role
- preserve before-and-after note and revised commitment
Primary deliverable: personal case exception and correction view.
20 Adapt the Workflow to Your Local Role
Compare two supplied employer role briefs and identify which steps, permissions, tools and escalation owners apply to a beginner in each.
Five practical steps
- Read role, state and product line
- compare lead and contact model
- check current qualification and delegated steps
- map tools, cadence and owners
- refer unknown permissions before action
Primary deliverable: local-role adaptation worksheet.
Applied capstone
Respond responsibly to a renewal question.
Use the relevant course methods to prepare one renewal response and handoff brief before the client's deadline.
The situation
Riley Carter contacts Maple Quay Agency through an approved portal ten days before a homeowners renewal. The current notice shows a changed premium, and Riley asks about newly purchased home-office equipment. A trainee may collect facts and give a process update, while a licensed producer must handle the coverage and renewal decision.
Your task
Separate confirmed facts from open coverage questions, identify the current documents, obtain accepted producer ownership and give Riley a truthful next-update time.

Questions and details
Frequently asked questions
Open the sections that matter to you, including delivery format, AI-supported practice and the evidence used to design the curriculum.
Who is this insurance sales course for?
This course is for beginning insurance sales and service professionals and adjacent-role staff who need a reliable way to handle prospect inquiries, discover client needs, discuss current policy information, prepare renewal cases and follow through on service requests. Use your employer's current procedures and a qualified owner for any step beyond your role.
Do I need an insurance license to study the course?
No license is required to study the lessons. The course teaches how to check your current authority for a specific state, line, product and employer process. A course-completion certificate does not grant an insurance license or permission to advise, bind or interpret coverage.
How does the course work?
The program is online and self-paced, with four modules, 20 applied lessons and one renewal capstone. Each lesson explains a practical method and offers a fictional case, a work-product template, a completed example and an optional AI practice route. You can complete the course over up to one month.
What practical work will I complete?
You will prepare a role-permission map, prospect contact plan, client needs record, source-backed policy explanation, quote request, follow-up record, service response, renewal preparation record and accepted handoff. The capstone brings a client renewal question into one renewal response and handoff brief.
How is AI used in the practical work?
Each lesson includes a focused draft prompt and a separate challenge prompt tied to its work product. Use only fictional or authorized information, check current source documents and local rules, and let an authorized human review consequential statements or decisions. A no-AI route is available for every exercise.
What evidence supports the curriculum?
MTF Institute reviewed 142 accepted current U.S. insurance-agent vacancies from 57 employer groups, then separately reviewed current changes in insurance sales and service work. The findings are available in two MTF Insights publications. The vacancy sample describes the reviewed postings rather than national prevalence.
What certificate and access will I receive?
After successful enrollment, you receive access to the MTF learning platform. Completing the required activities provides the MTF Institute course-completion certificate for Professional Certificate in Insurance Sales and a separate Student ID activity. The certificate records professional education; it does not confer a regulated insurance credential.
