Executive summary

This study examines 142 individually verified U.S. vacancy postings from 57 normalized hiring groups. The accepted set combines 98 first-party employer or applicant-tracking pages and 44 public job-board detail pages. It is a structured purposive sample of advertised opportunities on the evidence date, not a representative estimate of all U.S. openings. A linked index of every accepted source accompanies the published edition, and the Role Requirements Matrix below reports the coded findings.

The postings describe several related but distinct work situations. Prospecting or generating business is directly supported in 17 postings across 14 hiring groups; assessing client needs in 29 across 14; and explaining or presenting coverage in 13 across 13. Managing renewals or retention is explicit in 6 postings from 6 groups. These are mentions in this sample, not universal duties. The apparent breadth of a code can change sharply when employer repetition is considered: building or managing relationships appears in 35 postings but 4 groups. Presentation appears in 19 postings from just 1 group. Conditional FINRA registration or ability appears in 21 postings from one group, and must not be treated as a general requirement of insurance-agent work.

The evidence also points to a regulated boundary. A license line named in an ad is not a uniform national permission, a vacancy's product conversation is not authority to bind or underwrite, and an MTF educational certificate would not grant a U.S. producer license. The report presents what employers advertised, with separate status and timing for required, preferred and obtainable qualifications. BLS occupation context; NIPR state requirements.

Research question and occupational boundary

The question is: What duties, outputs, methods, qualifications, tools, interfaces, decision boundaries and work rhythms do current U.S. insurance-agent vacancies actually state? We include insurance agents, producers and direct insurance sales roles whose central work is selling or supporting the sale of insurance to people or businesses. The sample spans personal and commercial property/casualty, life, health and related lines when the role is substantively agent practice. A role was not included solely because its description mentioned an agent; underwriting-only, claims-adjustment-only, support-only, managerial distribution, non-U.S., and materially thin or stale pages were screened out. BLS classifies insurance sales agents as SOC 41-3021; O*NET's related 41-3021.00 title set includes agent, broker and sales-agent labels. Those occupational references supply context, not vacancy counts. BLS; O*NET.

Sources, sampling and current-status method

The research began with 185 individually identified candidates in employer/ATS and public-board source families. After role, geography, duplicate and current-status reconciliation, 142 were accepted; the other 43 were excluded because they were closed, unavailable, outside the role scope or too thin for this analysis. The accepted breakdown is 54 from the main employer set, 23 from its supplement, 38 from the main job-board set, 6 from its supplement, and 21 from an additional first-party set. Search-result totals were never treated as vacancy records.

Each first-party posting was inspected on its public employer or ATS detail page for substantive role text and an application route. Individual job-board detail pages were read directly, with unavailable, expired or unsuitable pages excluded. Candidate URLs identified from public career feeds or search results were accepted only after direct detail-page inspection. The 1 October 2026 evidence date is a snapshot, not a guarantee that a posting remained open afterward. For each accepted ID, the research record preserves its URL, page-read evidence, employer label, title, location, short supporting fragment, and uncertainty.

Deduplication required unique canonical URLs and source IDs and checked a normalized hiring-group/title/location identity. Distinct local opportunities remained separate postings where the employer offered different geographies or role streams; repeated template wording stayed within one hiring group for cross-employer support. Hiring groups are analytical groupings of displayed employers and related networks, not verified legal-entity identities. For example, two Health Exchange Agency/Leavitt Boca Raton pages have distinct Ashby IDs and different licensing/experience criteria, but count as one hiring-group support. A sensitivity check collapsing them into one role stream gives 141 postings; it does not create a new independent employer. S08 and X005.

Public advertisements are evidence, not licensed content for republication. This report paraphrases findings and cites source URLs; only brief fragments were used to support coding. It reproduces no complete job description, employer graphic, application form or proprietary template. The named employers did not endorse this report.

Coding rules and denominators

The matrix distinguishes recurring duties, work products, hard skills, observable soft skills, tools and channels, education and experience, explicit qualification status, role level, product-line signal, task cadence, interfaces, decisions and escalation. A code required a short, source-linked role or qualification phrase. Recruitment slogans, benefits, pay cycles, application instructions and corporate background were not converted into work requirements. Horace Mann's “Your Path to Success” language is recorded separately as an employer-stated success factor, not as a recurring duty. A preferred existing license is separate from a license that can be obtained after hire or is required before appointment. A role's silence about an item remains missing evidence, never a negative observation.

Every table uses the same accepted sample, but the number of postings with enough stated detail varies by evidence field. “With a supported code” means that at least one item in that field was substantiated by the posting; “uncoded” means no supported mention was retained, not that the work or requirement was absent. Exact posting and hiring-group counts for each code follow in the complete matrix.

Sample profile and source sensitivity

The primary-line labels are conservative signals from titles and qualification text. They do not assert that a hire sells every named product. Role levels are likewise advertisement labels rather than a standardized career ladder. The full profile appears in the matrix below. Of the accepted postings, 46 belong to the Horace Mann hiring group and 20 to the Leavitt Group network; the public-board family consists of 44 listings on one platform. Their repeated templates and channels can shape listing-weighted counts. The tables therefore report both postings and distinct hiring groups, and the sensitivity section removes Horace Mann from selected findings. The sample is purposive and cannot be projected to the national labor market.

Findings in work context

Prospecting and lead handling

Explicit prospecting or business-generation work appears in 17 postings/14 groups. Those postings include source-supported outreach, referral and new-business activity. E53, S01. Separately, the broader accepted corpus contains supplied, inbound or pre-screened lead models with response and follow-up work; these examples are not included in the prospecting numerator merely because a lead is present. S08, E46. A provided lead is not proof of a cold-calling duty, and a promised book of business is not itself a documented work output. These different acquisition models should not be collapsed into one generic agent task.

Discovery, policy explanation and quotation

Needs assessment is coded in 29 postings/14 groups. Explaining or presenting coverage is coded in 13/13, and quoting in 18/16. The descriptions can involve eliciting the client's situation, clarifying coverage terms, preparing a quote or application, and checking a carrier response. They do not establish a single universal sequence, coverage recommendation standard, pricing authority or binding authority. The source may describe a human sales conversation while a carrier or underwriting team controls a later decision. E46, E51, S15.

Renewals, service and accountable handoffs

Renewal or retention work is explicit in 6 postings/6 groups; service of existing policies in 5/5, and separately coded client service in 3/1. The assigned work ranges from assisting a team or processing a renewal to owning the customer decision and final close. Harper's renewal role is an ownership example; it does not define every vacancy in the renewal count. S13, B009, B010. In another employer model, a service team handles endorsements and routine renewal work so a producer concentrates on new business. Coordination with a carrier, underwriter or service teammate is coded as an interface when stated; it becomes an escalation only when the posting expressly assigns an escalation or reporting route. Claims support, when mentioned, is not claims adjudication. S01, BLS occupational duties.

Complete Role Requirements Matrix

Reading rule: every table uses the same accepted sample of 142 postings and 57 analytical hiring groups. A count is a stated, coded mention, not an inferred universal expectation. Rows within a table overlap: one posting may carry several duties, licenses or conditions. Missing-field counts appear above; zero explicit authority codes are discussed below. Qualification conditions are distinct from general skill mentions and retain the source's required/preferred/obtainable wording.

Authority and separately stated success factors

The matrix has 0 formal independent binding, pricing, underwriting or approval-authority codes because vacancy text does not verify the legal scope or limits of a producer's delegation. This is not a claim that no advertisement describes binding: one accepted posting assigns quoting, binding and issuing policies under underwriting guidelines as tasks. That task description does not establish the worker's independent legal authority, appointment or limits. BX008. The Horace Mann “Your Path to Success” template appears in its own matrix category and is excluded from the duty counts:

Sensitivity to the largest hiring group and source family

Removing Horace Mann leaves 96 postings from 56 groups. Treating S08/X005 as one Health Exchange Agency role stream in that reduced set leaves 95 postings, with the same hiring-group denominator. The selected-code comparison below recalculates support directly from retained source IDs; it is a sensitivity analysis, not a new sample of the national market.

In the table, HM means Horace Mann. “No HM + paired roles” removes Horace Mann and counts S08/X005 as one role stream when both support the same code; hiring-group support already treats them as one group.

Relationship-building mentions fall from 35/4 in the full sample to 11/3 without Horace Mann. Presentation and conditional FINRA ability disappear from this selected-code comparison when that one group is removed. Prospecting still appears across 14 other groups, needs assessment across 14, coverage explanation across 13, and renewals across 6. This contrast is why a high posting count cannot be described as cross-employer consensus by itself.

The first-party/ATS and public-board components differ in provenance and stability. The accepted sample contains 98 first-party and 44 board records. Public-board pages were especially volatile in same-day rechecks; first-party pages are more direct employer evidence but still may repeat a single group's template across locations. The displayed matrix tables show overall posting and hiring-group counts, not row-level source-family splits. Accordingly, a code should not be assumed to have equal support in both source families. Collapsing the two Health Exchange Agency Boca Raton role variants would reduce the full posting denominator from 142 to 141, while leaving their hiring-group support as one. S08, X005.

Regulated geography and occupational context

These are United States vacancies, but producer authority is state- and line-specific. BLS states that agents are licensed in the states where they work and distinguishes life/health from property/casualty licensing. NIPR directs applicants to the relevant state's resident/nonresident and license-type requirements; NAIC's handbook organizes licensing and appointment concepts but is model guidance rather than enacted nationwide law. A remote job's list of permitted states is a hiring constraint, not a portable license. A conditional FINRA mention in one employer template cannot be generalized to every insurance agent; a securities product can require separate registration. BLS; NIPR; NAIC; FINRA.

Evidence layer Geographic scope Sound use Limit
Accepted vacancy pages U.S. local or stated U.S.-remote opportunity Advertised work and qualifications on the evidence date Not a national probability sample or a license grant
BLS and O*NET U.S. occupation Broad occupational title and task context Not current vacancy prevalence or employer-specific authority
NAIC and NIPR State-based U.S. producer administration Identify line, resident/nonresident and appointment checks Model guidance and lookup do not replace current state rules
FINRA and FTC Product, entity and channel dependent federal context Flag securities, contact and information-handling boundaries No universal permission for a particular call, product or client case

No listing or educational certificate establishes that a person may sell, advise on, quote, bind, issue, cancel or adjudicate a particular policy. Actual authority depends on the current license, line, jurisdiction, insurer appointment or delegation, product and employer procedure. Contact-channel and client-data obligations likewise depend on the transaction and entity; the vacancy evidence does not establish a universal calling script or retention period. This research does not give individualized coverage, financial, legal, claims or compliance advice. FTC telemarketing guidance; FTC financial privacy overview.

Limitations and reproducibility

The sample is purposive, not random or statistically representative. Its source platforms, U.S. state mix, role mix and employer concentration shape the observations. A hiring group's repeated localized postings can expand a listing count without expanding independent corroboration. An ad may omit routine tasks, use a vague title or leave decision authority unstated. An uncoded field is an evidence gap, not a negative answer. The independent 2026 current-changes article draws on regulator, association, original research and a labeled vendor example; its sources provide context but contribute no vacancy observations or prevalence to this report.

The linked source index supplied with the published edition gives an ID, public URL, advertised role and location for every accepted posting. The tables above state the counting unit and show posting and hiring-group support for each code; selected citations allow immediate source inspection. Source pages may change after the evidence date, so live status should be rechecked before later reuse. Full employer text is not redistributed.
