Professional Certificate in Software Quality Assurance and Testing
Enter software testing through practical quality work—without needing to become a developer first. This online, self-paced professional course teaches a complete manual QA workflow and introduces the technical literacy used by contemporary delivery teams.
Practical capability
Turn expected behaviour into useful test evidence. Learn to read a supplied test basis, expose gaps, prioritize quality risks, design deliberate coverage, execute planned and exploratory tests, report defects, verify fixes, select regression checks and communicate a bounded completion recommendation.
The course starts with observation, reasoning and clear writing. Browser inspection, API responses, readable data queries, issue trackers, test management systems, automation frameworks and CI/CD appear as supporting tools—not as a demand that every tester first become a software developer.
Who this course is for
This is a practical route into IT for aspiring manual testers, career changers, support and operations professionals, junior QA practitioners, beginning business analysts and product-adjacent professionals. No prior programming experience is required. Curiosity, careful observation, constructive communication and willingness to document evidence are more important starting points.
The testing sequence
Move from a proposed change to a bounded recommendation. Understand the change, prioritize risk, design coverage, execute and explore, manage defects, select regression evidence and support the people accountable for product acceptance and release timing.
What you will be able to do
Create a reviewable QA workflow from test basis to release discussion. You will distinguish facts from assumptions, write executable manual test cases, investigate with exploratory charters, preserve useful defect evidence, inspect accessible technical signals and explain what was covered, what was found and what remains uncertain.
Curriculum
Four modules. Twenty applied lessons. Every lesson produces one primary professional artifact that can be adapted to another fictional or real workplace context.
Module 1: Understand the Tester Workflow and Test Basis
-
Understand the Software Tester Role and Work Cycle
Map the tester's contribution, stakeholders, decisions and responsibility boundaries. Primary deliverable: QA Work Map.
-
Read a Supplied Test Basis and Find Gaps
Extract expected behaviour, mark ambiguity, find missing states and prepare neutral questions. Primary deliverable: Test Basis Review Notes.
-
Prioritize Product Quality Risks
Connect credible failures with impact, likelihood and uncertainty to focus testing effort. Primary deliverable: Risk-Based Coverage Worksheet.
-
Define a Bounded Test Approach
State scope, test types, evidence, entry conditions, exclusions and open risks. Primary deliverable: Bounded Test Approach.
-
Prepare the Environment and Synthetic Test Data
Confirm dependencies, access, versions, repeatability and privacy-safe test data. Primary deliverable: Test Readiness Plan.
Module 2: Design Effective Manual Test Coverage
-
Derive Test Conditions from Risks and Expected Behaviour
Turn risks and expectations into positive, negative and state-based test conditions. Primary deliverable: Test Condition Catalogue.
-
Write Executable Manual Test Cases
Define purpose, preconditions, data, actions and observable expected results. Primary deliverable: Manual Test Case Set.
-
Cover Inputs, Boundaries and Business Rules
Select representative values around valid partitions, invalid partitions, edges and interacting rules. Primary deliverable: Input and Rule Coverage Table.
-
Test User Journeys, States and Failure Paths
Design coverage across screens, state changes, alternate paths, interruptions and recovery. Primary deliverable: User Journey Test Pack.
-
Plan a Time-Boxed Exploratory Testing Session
Write a focused charter with a target, useful heuristics, a time box, note-taking and debrief questions. Primary deliverable: Exploratory Session Charter.
Module 3: Execute Tests and Manage Defects
-
Execute Manual Tests and Record Results
Perform checks consistently and preserve environment, input, observation, actual result and outcome. Primary deliverable: Test Execution Log.
-
Explore, Observe and Debrief
Follow useful observations while keeping the investigative mission and evidence trail visible. Primary deliverable: Exploratory Session Notes.
-
Write a Reproducible Defect Report
Produce a specific title, context, steps, expected result, actual result and proportionate supporting evidence. Primary deliverable: Reproducible Defect Report.
-
Support Defect Triage with Clear Evidence
Explain affected users, observed impact and uncertainty while preserving severity and priority decisions for accountable roles. Primary deliverable: Defect Triage Brief.
-
Retest Fixes and Close the Defect Loop
Repeat reproduction steps, compare the corrected behaviour, inspect credible side effects and record the result. Primary deliverable: Fix Verification Record.
Module 4: Build Regression and Technical Testing Literacy
-
Select Proportionate Regression Coverage
Use change impact, dependencies and product risk to choose a focused regression set and record omissions. Primary deliverable: Regression Selection Matrix.
-
Inspect APIs Without Becoming a Developer
Read an endpoint, request, status and response body to compare technical behaviour with expectation. Primary deliverable: API Check Record.
-
Validate Data with Readable Queries and Comparisons
Define a data question, identify fields, use a transparent query and record comparison limits. Primary deliverable: Data Validation Worksheet.
-
Collaborate on Automation and CI/CD
Identify a stable repeatable check and hand it to automation partners with value, data, oracle, pipeline placement and maintenance needs. Primary deliverable: Automation Candidate Handoff.
-
Communicate Test Completion and Support Acceptance
Synthesise scope, results, defects, omissions, residual uncertainty and a bounded recommendation for decision owners. Primary deliverable: Test Completion Recommendation.
Applied capstone
Create a Release Test Decision Brief for a complete fictional appointment-booking change. Bring together the change and decision, risk-based coverage, execution and exploratory evidence, defects and fix verification, regression and technical checks, omitted coverage, residual uncertainty and responsible owners. Your recommendation supports the product and release owners; it does not approve the release or accept residual risk on their behalf.
How the course works
The course is 100% online and self-paced. A reasonable planning estimate is approximately 28 to 40 hours of focused study and practical work within a study window of up to one month. Each lesson combines theory, an applied method, a blank template, a worked fictional example and an independent workplace-transfer activity.
Model-agnostic AI prompt cards help organise supplied case facts and critique draft artifacts. You verify every response against the source facts, the lesson method and the stated quality criteria before retaining it. The tool never replaces direct observation or tester judgment.
Evidence behind the course
The curriculum is grounded in original MTF Institute analysis of 108 current United States vacancy observations from 98 employer labels and a separate practice article on software testing as decision evidence.
