SEO and Content Marketing Work in the United States, 2026: Evidence from 100 Current Vacancies

Executive summary
This report examines 100 current, suitable U.S. vacancies to understand how employers connect SEO, content marketing, earned authority, and performance evidence. The corpus contains 100 unique public URLs from 95 employers: 72 direct employer or applicant-tracking-system postings and 28 individual secondary vacancy pages. It is a structured purposive point-in-time sample, not a census or a statistically representative estimate of U.S. employment.
The strongest coded signal is performance measurement, present in 81 vacancies. AI-search, answer-engine, or generative-engine discovery appears in 56; technical SEO in 44; keyword or search-intent work in 42; writing and editing in 42; on-page SEO in 38; content strategy in 38; digital PR or earned-authority work in 31; internal linking in 21; and explicit content-brief work in nine. The counts overlap because one vacancy can contain several responsibilities.
The pattern supports a connected professional workflow rather than a set of isolated tactics. Employers commonly ask people to plan a roadmap, interpret search and audience evidence, coordinate content production, improve page and site signals, work across teams, and measure performance. Strategy or roadmap work appears in 82 vacancies, while measurement and reporting duties appear in 79. The two co-occur in 64. Measurement/reporting duties and performance-measurement skills co-occur in 77.
The evidence also shows why current professional preparation must not become a collection of tool tutorials. Search Console, Google Analytics, Semrush, Ahrefs, content-management systems, spreadsheets, AI tools, and crawling tools appear, but no one platform defines the job. The transferable capability is to make a defensible decision, document the evidence and limitations, produce a useful artifact, coordinate the right specialists, and evaluate what happened.
No finding in this report promises rankings, AI citations, links, editorial coverage, traffic, leads, revenue, employment, or salary. Vacancy text expresses hiring intent at a particular moment. It does not prove how work is performed after hiring or what outcomes a person or organization will achieve.
1. Research purpose
The research asked one practical question: what should a current SEO and content marketing professional be able to do when employers treat organic discovery as a connected operating field?
Six focus areas guided collection and coding:
- keyword and search-intent interpretation;
- content planning and decision-ready briefs;
- on-page SEO and content quality;
- internal linking and information architecture;
- ethical digital PR and earned authority;
- performance measurement and improvement.
The research also tested whether these areas belong together in the labor market or whether the proposed scope would force unrelated roles into one artificial job. To answer that question, the study recorded duties, outputs, skills, tools, seniority, cadence, team interfaces, authority, escalation, and co-occurrence. It retained both combined and separated operating models. A vacancy did not need to mention every focus area to be accepted, but organic search or closely connected earned-discovery responsibility had to be material.
2. Method
2.1 Discovery and inclusion
Public vacancy discovery took place on 16 September 2026. Search routes covered SEO, organic search, content marketing and strategy, technical SEO, AI-search/AEO/GEO work, digital PR, and earned media. The raw discovery ledger contains 630 records.
Each accepted record had to be an identifiable vacancy; current on the evidence date; U.S.-based, U.S.-remote, or explicitly U.S.-eligible; materially concerned with organic search, SEO, organic-discovery content marketing, digital PR, earned authority, or a closely adjacent search-content role; and supported by enough public text for a minimal evidence excerpt and controlled coding.
The source hierarchy preferred an individual employer or ATS page. An individual secondary page was accepted only when it identified the employer, role, U.S. location, and sufficient substantive text. Search results, category pages, empty ATS shells without usable indexed evidence, non-U.S. vacancies, closed or stale pages, duplicate records, and scope-mismatched roles were rejected.
The final source mix is 72 direct employer or ATS postings and 28 individual secondary pages. Some ATS sites returned an empty client-rendered shell while a public search index exposed substantive vacancy text. Those cases retain the public vacancy URL, retrieval date, minimal excerpt, and an uncertainty note. No authentication, CAPTCHA, paywall, or access control was bypassed.
2.2 Scope audit and deduplication
Deduplication used canonical URL normalization, list-page rejection, normalized employer-title-location comparison, and manual consolidation of syndicated copies. When two pages represented the same vacancy, the higher-priority source was retained.
An independent final audit removed eleven broad content, employee-experience, product-launch, social, event, or general content roles that lacked material organic-search evidence. One edge record was retained because its title or text explicitly established foundational SEO/content alignment; it received narrow codes rather than inferred advanced skills.
The resulting corpus contains 100 vacancies, 100 unique URLs, and 95 normalized employers. Record identifiers are sequential from V001 to V100.
2.3 Coding and interpretation
The controlled coding schema records duties, outputs, hard skills, observable behaviors, tools, qualifications, seniority, cadence, interfaces, authority, and escalation. A code requires an explicit signal in the retrieved text. Silence means “not stated,” not “absent.”
Several safeguards reduce false positives. Technical SEO does not trigger on the search-index word “crawled.” AI discovery requires explicit AEO, GEO, AI-search, answer-engine, generative-engine, or comparable language. Content briefs, internal linking, and digital PR require specific wording. Co-occurrence means two observed codes appear in the same vacancy; it does not establish causality, sequence, proficiency, or time allocation.
Complete job descriptions were not stored. The evidence ledger retains a URL, short necessary excerpt, derived codes, and provenance fields. This supports review without republishing employer expression.
3. What employers combine
3.1 Strategy and measurement form the operating spine
Strategy or roadmap work appears in 82 vacancies, the most frequent duty. Measurement and reporting appears in 79. The two duties co-occur in 64 vacancies, while measurement/reporting and an explicit performance-measurement skill co-occur in 77.
This pattern rejects two weak models of the occupation. The first treats SEO as a list of isolated page edits detached from a plan. The second treats content marketing as publication volume without a defensible performance question. Current vacancies more often connect planning with evidence use: define priorities, coordinate work, observe results, explain implications, and adjust.
Performance measurement appears as a hard-skill signal in 81 vacancies. The text includes analytics, reporting, KPIs, Search Console, dashboards, and related evidence use. Tools are present but fragmented: Semrush and Google Analytics or GA4 appear in 27 vacancies each, Google Search Console in 26, Ahrefs in 22, AI tools in 19, content-management systems in 17, spreadsheets in 14, Screaming Frog in ten, WordPress in eight, and Adobe Analytics in three.
These counts do not make one tool mandatory. They support a vendor-neutral measurement capability: define the decision, preserve the metric's source and time window, check configuration and coverage, distinguish observation from attribution, and communicate uncertainty.
3.2 Search intent remains foundational while AI discovery becomes material
Keyword and search-intent work appears in 42 vacancies. AI-search, answer-engine, or generative-engine discovery appears in 56. The latter is material enough to require professional attention, but it does not replace established research and content work.
The practical interpretation is that intent now spans more surfaces and more complex journeys. A professional may need to connect keyword evidence, longer questions, entities, topics, audience language, conventional results, answer surfaces, and downstream site behavior. The evidence does not support a separate guarantee-producing discipline for AI citations. It supports careful query interpretation, useful source material, testable page and content decisions, and explicit measurement limits.
The capability should therefore be framed around decisions rather than labels. A robust intent record distinguishes the apparent query from the user's task, information required, likely next question, stage of decision, source quality, ambiguity, and acceptable evidence. This approach remains useful when interfaces change.
3.3 Content work is both editorial and operational
Writing or editing appears in 42 vacancies, and content strategy in 38. Content-creation or editing duties appear in 45. Common outputs include optimized content in 34 vacancies, audit recommendations in 32, PR coverage or links in 18, a performance report in 11, a measurement framework in nine, a content brief and editorial calendar in eight each, an SEO roadmap in six, and content-inventory governance in four.
Explicit content-brief skills appear in only nine vacancies, with eight naming a brief as an output. The conservative count should not be converted into evidence that briefs are unimportant. Job advertisements often compress working methods inside broader strategy, production, or collaboration language. The correct inference is narrower: a brief is a recognizable artifact in part of the market, while its professional value must also be judged through the duties it coordinates.
A decision-ready brief can connect the vacancy signals without becoming a proprietary template. It can identify audience task, intent evidence, page purpose, required questions, claims and sources, information structure, internal relationships, editorial and legal checks, owner, delivery state, and measurement plan. The evidence supports the need for such coordination; it does not justify copying any employer or vendor format.
3.4 On-page work sits beside technical and editorial responsibilities
Technical SEO appears in 44 vacancies and on-page SEO in 38. The two categories are related but not interchangeable. Technical work can include crawl, indexation, rendering, canonical, performance, structured-data, and implementation concerns. On-page work can include titles, headings, body structure, metadata, page purpose, content relevance, and links.
The course territory implied by the evidence is practical diagnosis and specialist handoff, not production engineering. A content or SEO professional should be able to identify a problem, gather the right evidence, estimate its consequence, propose a bounded action, and verify the result. Server administration, migrations, production deployment, and unreviewed live changes remain outside a safe general professional-learning scope.
On-page quality is also an editorial control. A page should make one primary purpose understandable, answer the intended task, align visible content and descriptive signals, support material claims, show meaningful relationships, and state what the evidence does not establish. A technically valid page can still be unhelpful, inaccurate, or misleading.
3.5 Internal linking is explicit but not universal
Internal linking appears explicitly in 21 vacancies, and internal-link optimization appears as a duty in the same number. The signal is large enough to treat internal pathways as professional work, yet it is far from universal in vacancy language.
This supports a disciplined, non-formulaic approach. Internal links can help people continue a task, help teams maintain topic relationships, and help crawlers discover and interpret site structure. A professional should be able to inventory relevant pages, identify isolated or competing destinations, choose descriptive anchors, define source and destination roles, and review whether the pathway actually helps the visitor.
The vacancy evidence does not support promises based on link counts, anchor repetition, or a proprietary authority score. Nor does it make internal linking a substitute for useful content, sound architecture, or technical accessibility.
3.6 Digital PR is a distinct earned-authority interface
Digital PR or earned-authority skills appear in 31 vacancies, with digital-PR or outreach duties in 30 and coverage/link outputs in 18. PR or communications teams appear as an interface in 28 vacancies, while legal or compliance interfaces appear in 19.
The distribution supports digital PR as a meaningful part of organic discovery, but not as a universal responsibility. It also shows why it must be bounded. The legitimate professional work is to identify a real public-interest or audience need, develop truthful and useful evidence or expertise, select relevant independent sources or publishers, prepare accurate outreach, disclose material relationships, and measure outcomes without controlling editorial judgment.
The study does not validate mass unsolicited outreach, fabricated data, paid influence presented as independent coverage, link exchanges, or pressure for favorable links. It also does not turn the field into corporate crisis, issues, spokesperson, or press-office work. Those remain distinct communications responsibilities.
4. How the work is organized
4.1 Cross-functional interfaces
Brand or creative interfaces appear in 68 vacancies, executives or clients in 48, content or editorial teams in 37, PR or communications in 28, engineering or web teams in 27, sales or demand teams in 24, legal or compliance in 19, product in 17, and dedicated analytics interfaces in six.
This breadth explains why artifacts and decision rights matter. SEO and content professionals rarely control every system or approval. A useful brief, audit, recommendation, or report must allow another person to understand the evidence, required action, owner, due date, risk, and verification condition.
Observable collaboration appears in 55 vacancies, analytical judgment in 48, communication in 44, leadership and project management in 37 each, stakeholder influence in 36, adaptability in 18, and attention to detail in ten. These are coded behaviors disclosed in the vacancy text, not personality traits or psychological measures.
4.2 Authority and seniority
The sample includes 38 manager or lead roles, 33 individual-contributor roles, 21 senior roles, and eight director roles. Fifty-eight vacancies signal leadership of an initiative or team, 56 ownership of a workstream or strategy, 38 vendor or budget authority, and six explicit people management.
The evidence therefore supports ownership without pretending that every learner will be a department head. Individual contributors also need to define recommendations, coordinate handoffs, preserve evidence, and know when an action requires approval. Legal or compliance escalation appears in 22 vacancies, reporting to a named manager in 20, and leadership escalation in 16.
A transferable operating model should separate preparation, recommendation, approval, execution, and verification. AI or analytics tools can support research, classification, drafting, or anomaly detection. They do not grant authority to publish, contact external parties, change production pages, disclose data, spend money, or make legal claims.
5. Evidence-led professional implications
The vacancy corpus supports an integrated capability chain:
- Frame the organic-discovery decision. Define the audience, task, business context, scope, owner, evidence window, and success or stop condition.
- Interpret search and audience evidence. Connect keywords, questions, entities, topics, competing results, internal data, and explicit uncertainty.
- Prioritize and brief useful content. Specify the page or asset purpose, required evidence, information order, claims, source standards, internal relationships, and review route.
- Improve on-page quality and pathways. Align titles, headings, summaries, body structure, metadata, links, structured information, and page purpose; route technical changes to authorized specialists.
- Earn attention ethically. Build a truthful evidence or expert contribution, select relevant independent audiences, disclose material relationships, and preserve editorial choice.
- Measure and improve. Track visibility, eligible engagement, qualified visits, assisted outcomes, attributed outcomes, and experiments where feasible; record configuration, anomalies, and causal limits.
This chain is evidence-led, but it is not a claim that all 100 employers use one process. It is a coherent synthesis of recurring, overlapping responsibilities that can produce reviewable workplace artifacts.
6. Limitations
The corpus is purposive and point-in-time. Percentages describe only the 100 accepted vacancies. Public discoverability, English-language search, source accessibility, ATS behavior, and the chosen queries affect inclusion. Vacancies can change or close after retrieval.
Twenty-eight records come from individual secondary pages, which may normalize employer wording. Some ATS records rely on public indexed text because the direct page rendered an empty shell. Complete vacancy bodies were not retained, so contextual interpretation is intentionally bounded.
Machine-assisted dictionary coding can miss synonyms or capture boilerplate. Conservative rules and an independent scope audit reduce that risk but do not eliminate it. Missing codes mean “not stated,” not that the employer does not expect the activity. Co-occurrence does not prove importance, sequence, causality, or proficiency.
Vacancy text describes advertised expectations, not actual practice, hiring decisions, worker performance, salary outcomes, or future demand. The study does not support employment, promotion, ranking, citation, backlink, coverage, traffic, conversion, revenue, or ROI promises.
7. Conclusion
The 100-vacancy sample depicts SEO and content marketing as a connected professional field with a clear operating center: strategy and measurement. Search intent, technical and on-page work, content strategy and editing, internal pathways, and earned authority appear around that center with different frequencies and organizational boundaries.
The professional response should therefore combine durable principles with explicit adaptation after September 2026. Professionals need to understand complex intent and AI-assisted discovery without abandoning people-first usefulness. They need decision-ready briefs, truthful on-page signals, coherent internal pathways, ethical digital PR, and measurement that distinguishes visibility from business impact. They also need the judgment to stop, escalate, or qualify a claim when evidence or authority is missing.
The proper educational response is not a promise of algorithmic advantage. It is a repeatable method for turning evidence into transparent, reviewable organic-discovery decisions.
Evidence and reproducibility note
The accompanying public archive preserves a rights-safe accepted-vacancy index in CSV, the aggregate role-requirements matrix, the co-occurrence table, the coding summary, geography controls, methods, and limitations. The controlled internal evidence ledger retains individual URLs and minimal necessary excerpts for traceability; those excerpts and the raw discovery ledger are not republished. Hashes are recorded before public archival so later reviewers can confirm the evidence version used for this report.
Reproducibility protocol
A reviewer can reproduce the headline counts without revisiting every public page. First, verify the archived file hashes against the archive manifest. Then read the 100 rows in the rights-safe CSV and confirm that record IDs, canonical URLs, and normalized employer labels are unique at the stated levels. Split the semicolon-delimited controlled fields for duties, outputs, hard skills, tools, interfaces, authority, escalation, and seniority. Each code is counted at most once per vacancy. Divide the count by the fixed denominator of 100; the displayed percentage is therefore numerically equal to the count.
For co-occurrence, count a vacancy only when both exact codes appear in the same accepted record. Preserve the direction and denominator when interpreting conditional relationships. The public summary reports corpus-level overlap, not a causal or temporal sequence. Reconcile the recreated totals with the role-requirements matrix, co-occurrence table, coding summary, and geography matrix. A disagreement means the evidence version or coding logic has changed and the report should be reviewed before reuse.
Live URLs may later close, redirect, or change. Reproducibility in this archive means reproducing the analysis of the fixed evidence record collected on 16 September 2026, not asserting that every vacancy remains open. The minimal excerpts and provenance fields support acceptance review while respecting employer expression.
Rights and responsible use
This report contains original analysis of factual, derived observations. Employer and platform names identify public sources; their trademarks and vacancy expression remain with their owners. The archive does not reproduce complete job descriptions, vendor training materials, proprietary frameworks, certification content, or product interfaces. It may be used to inspect the study method and evidence, not to republish vacancy text or imply employer endorsement.
