A project management course is worth taking when it changes the decisions you can make and the evidence you can produce—not merely the vocabulary you recognize. The useful test is whether the curriculum connects project purpose, scope, schedule, resources, risk, stakeholders and delivery into one controlled system.

This guide provides PROJECT-8, a 100-point curriculum and applied-evidence checklist. It can be used to compare a short course, professional certificate or employer training programme without assuming that one format is best for everyone.

The direct answer: what should a project management course teach?

A credible curriculum should develop eight connected capabilities:

Use the 0–2 evidence rule

For each capability, assign:

  • 0 when the topic is absent or only named;
  • 1 when it is explained through examples or exercises;
  • 2 when the learner produces an applied artefact, receives feedback and revises it.

Multiply the capability weight by the score and divide by two. A course that receives 2 for scope earns all 15 scope points; a score of 1 earns 7.5.

Worked comparison

Suppose Course A is strong on terminology, scheduling software and exam questions but asks learners to produce only a basic plan. Its weighted result is 55/100. Course B uses one continuing case: learners define the outcome, build the charter, model dependencies, test a cost scenario, handle a change request and close with a benefits review. Even if Course B covers fewer tools, its applied result may reach 86/100.

The higher score does not prove universal superiority. It shows which course is more likely to produce inspectable work rather than topic recognition.

Check whether the curriculum treats a project as a system

The UK Government's current GovS 002: Project Delivery standard sets expectations for the direction and management of portfolios, programmes and projects. Its value for a course buyer is the systems view: governance, roles, planning, control, assurance and learning are related. A curriculum that teaches a schedule without scope control, or risk without decision rights, fragments the work.

Ask the provider how a change request moves through the course. A strong answer should connect at least five consequences:

  1. the intended outcome and justification;
  2. scope and acceptance criteria;
  3. schedule and dependencies;
  4. resource or cost implications;
  5. risk, approval and communication.

If the learner only edits a task list, the course is teaching administration rather than project control.

Inspect assessment quality before enrolling

Request the assessment method, not just the syllabus. Look for these signals:

  • a case with incomplete or conflicting information;
  • explicit criteria for a good charter, plan or decision memo;
  • at least one forecast update after evidence changes;
  • a documented exception, risk or change decision;
  • feedback that requires revision rather than simple completion;
  • privacy-safe artefacts that can be adapted into a professional portfolio.

Multiple-choice questions can test recognition. They cannot, by themselves, demonstrate that a manager can identify an impossible dependency, state a trade-off or escalate a forecast change.

Verify decision rights and human accountability

Modern courses often add AI-supported planning. That can be useful for generating alternatives, checking completeness or challenging assumptions. It does not transfer accountability to the tool.

A course should make clear who owns the business case, who approves scope, who accepts risk, who authorizes cost or schedule changes, and who confirms acceptance. Learners should be required to verify generated statements against project records and specialist advice.

Look for forecasting, not decorative status colours

Project control is not a weekly choice among red, amber and green. Learners should practise comparing baseline, actual and forecast information. At minimum, a status exercise should state:

  • the approved baseline;
  • the current forecast;
  • the variance and its driver;
  • the confidence or evidence quality;
  • the decision or escalation required;
  • the next review date and owner.

This matters because a project can be green against last week's tasks while its benefit, cost or launch forecast is deteriorating.

Require a complete evidence portfolio

By the end of a broad project management course, a learner should be able to show a coherent portfolio rather than eight unrelated templates. A practical minimum is:

  1. outcome and stakeholder brief;
  2. project charter with boundaries;
  3. milestone and dependency plan;
  4. resource-and-cost scenario;
  5. risk, issue and change register;
  6. decision-ready status report;
  7. acceptance and quality record;
  8. benefits and lessons review.

Confidential employer information should be removed or replaced with a fictional case. The point is to show reasoning, traceability and control.

Warning signs in a course description

Treat these as questions to resolve:

  • “master project management” through passive video only;
  • a long tool list with no decision model;
  • Agile and Waterfall presented as identities rather than design choices;
  • no distinction among project, programme and portfolio work;
  • no acceptance criteria or benefits review;
  • risk taught without owners, triggers or response authority;
  • AI exercises with no evidence, privacy or human-review boundary;
  • a professional certificate described in language that could be confused with an academic degree or regulated licence.

A 15-minute buyer audit

Take the published syllabus and mark one line of evidence for every PROJECT-8 capability. Then score 0, 1 or 2. Check that the programme page states delivery format, workload, tuition, credential status and assessment approach. Finally, ask which artefacts a successful learner actually completes.

Use the score to identify missing evidence, not to manufacture precision. A 78 with strong scope and risk work may fit a delivery manager better than an 85 weighted toward exam preparation.
