The OECD Due Diligence Guidance for Responsible Business Conduct addresses adverse impacts across workers, human rights, the environment, bribery, consumers and governance.

These sources serve different purposes. Together, they reveal the practical challenge: sustainability work crosses finance, risk, operations, procurement, data and leadership. Training should help a manager integrate those domains without pretending that one framework replaces another or that a certificate provides legal assurance.

How to interpret the score

  • 85–100: strong applied design, if the evidence is genuinely assessed;
  • 70–84: useful foundation with identifiable gaps to close elsewhere;
  • 50–69: mostly conceptual or uneven;
  • below 50: awareness content, not sufficient preparation for accountable sustainability work.

A high score is not proof of instructional quality. Verify who teaches, how work is assessed, whether feedback is substantive, which standards version is used and whether learners can inspect the syllabus before paying.

A worked comparison

Suppose Program A devotes substantial time to definitions, ratings and case stories. It covers all eight labels but asks only multiple-choice questions. Program B covers fewer frameworks, yet requires a materiality memo, an emissions-boundary case, a supplier due-diligence workflow and a board decision paper.

Under SUSTAIN-8, Program B can score higher because the outputs expose judgement. A learner must decide what is in scope, identify a source, state an assumption, reconcile data and recommend an action. That is closer to the work managers face than recalling a glossary.

Five assessment questions to ask before enrolling

  1. What will I produce? Ask for the names of the assessed artefacts, not only the module titles.
  2. Which source controls the lesson? Current standards and laws can change; the course should name dates, jurisdictions and primary sources.
  3. How are conflicting objectives handled? Sustainability decisions can affect cost, growth, suppliers, employees and risk differently.
  4. Where does assurance stop? Training should distinguish internal review, external assurance, legal advice and certification.
  5. Can I reuse the method? A good framework should transfer to another company, region or sector after the assumptions are changed.

Red flags

  • a promise that one metric or rating captures the whole organization;
  • global legal claims without jurisdiction and date;
  • reporting content without data ownership or control design;
  • climate claims without inventory boundaries and estimation rules;
  • supply-chain content without remediation or escalation;
  • strategy content without capital, operating or procurement decisions;
  • an assessment that rewards terminology but never tests judgement;
  • claims that a professional certificate is an academic degree, professional licence or guarantee of compliance.

Build a learning-to-work bridge

Before starting, choose one bounded workplace question: for example, whether to improve supplier emissions data, redesign a product claim, prioritize a facility project or introduce a sustainability review into procurement. During the course, collect five forms of evidence:

  1. the decision and its owner;
  2. the controlling source and date;
  3. the data boundary and known gaps;
  4. the options and trade-offs;
  5. the implementation and review cadence.

This turns learning into a portfolio while keeping confidential company data out of assignments. Use simulated or anonymised cases when necessary.
