Abstract
Agricultural commodity trade is a connected family of jobs, not one uniform occupation. This country-stratified review asks what current public vacancies in the United States, Canada, the United Kingdom and Singapore explicitly ask people to perform, produce, know, coordinate and escalate. The U.S. coded inventory contains 84 principal employer requisitions across commercial/market, physical-operations and adjacent specialist roles, with three context records and one worksite-ambiguous exclusion. Separate principal inventories contain 10 Canadian, 11 UK and 10 Singapore roles, with their own context records and limitations. These are purposively selected advertisements, not a combined global denominator. The linked examples show work involving dated market information, product and quality terms, physical movement, transaction records and controlled handoffs. Merchant, logistics, finance, credit and regulated brokerage decisions belong to different role levels and authorities.
Research question and geography
What tasks and decision boundaries do current publicly accessible agricultural-commodity vacancies with worksites in four declared markets describe? The design is international and covers the United States and Canada in North America, the United Kingdom in Europe, and Singapore in Asia. Worksite determines the stratum; a role's trading territory does not. Russia, Ukraine, sanctioned jurisdictions and all other countries outside the four-country allowlist are excluded from the vacancy sample.
A vacancy records an employer's stated requirements at an observation date. It does not prove a hire, a worker's actual duties on every shift, the prevalence of a skill across a national workforce or future demand. The country samples deliberately include different work situations and seniority levels. No national sample stands in for another, and their counts are not pooled to make a worldwide claim.
Collection and coding method
The observation date is 14 October 2026. A principal record requires a distinct identifiable role, worksite in the declared country, agricultural-commodity or directly relevant physical-trade fit, a current application or equivalent live signal, and enough detail to code role duties and limits. Direct employer pages and employer-authorized recruiting systems are preferred; employer-authored public posts and recruiter listings carry their weaker identity and freshness assurance. Each ledger preserves its URL, identity, source, observation signal, role level, minimal supporting excerpt, duties and outputs, technical and observable behavioral skills, required versus preferred wording, cadence, interfaces, authority and limitations. An unstated approval limit is not inferred from a job title.
One employer requisition counts once even when it lists several worksites. Reposts and near-identical advertisements are checked against employer, requisition, title and worksite. The U.S. source-valid inventory contains 88 identities: 84 principal, three context-only and one excluded because the employer's worksite fields conflict. The principal U.S. strata are 38 commercial/market roles, 15 physical operations and logistics roles, and 31 adjacent commodity or specialist-support roles. The three context entries are a grain-origination sales internship focused on projects and assistance, a farmer-facing grain role without a direct coded transaction or analytical duty, and a strategic-account role supporting origination. Their presence illustrates the boundary between an entry pathway and an assigned trade task. The excluded internship has conflicting Fort Benton and Kershaw worksite text. Canada has 10 principal and two frontline physical-context roles, with two historical/context identities outside its current count. The UK has 11 principal and one dairy-market context role. Singapore has 10 principal and four reserve/context records.
The evidence is structured purposive sampling, not a random or complete labour-market census. Role families differ across the four countries, and repeated employer templates can repeat skill language. In the U.S. selected principal inventory, Louis Dreyfus Company contributes 19 roles, Bunge 14 and Cargill 9, or 42 of 84 together. This is sample composition, not their share of U.S. employment or hiring. There are 78 distinct employer-plus-normalized-title families among the 84 principal requisitions; this diagnostic does not catch every differently titled near-duplicate. In Canada, the 10 principal roles come from two employers. Singapore includes anonymous recruiter listings and one live six-month-old specialist posting. An Apply control or a relative posting age is point-in-time evidence and may change.
Findings below use source-linked role examples rather than pooled skill frequencies. The separate four-market current-changes article draws primarily on dated public-sector and professional releases, with a separately published U.S. review. Those releases are contextual evidence, outside every vacancy denominator.
United States: separate commercial, physical and specialist work
The 84 principal U.S. postings include 17 entry or trainee, 46 practitioner and 21 senior or leadership roles within this purposive corpus. Their functions should not be collapsed into one job description. An Andersons Eastern Grains Merchant combines farmer origination, regional market interpretation, contract terms and truck movement. A Perdue grain-storage manager instead leads receiving, drying, storage, distribution and grade control. An ADM FOB Trucking Merchandiser I assists buying and selling and prepares shipment and sales records in a supporting practitioner role. The sources establish distinct commercial, physical and trade-support tasks, not interchangeable authority.
Within the selected U.S. advertisements, the independently coded topic counts are:
| Stated work or role-knowledge topic | Grain commercial and physical roles A+B (53) | Adjacent commodity or specialist roles C (31) |
|---|---|---|
| Physical origination, buying or selling (MKT) | 35 | 10 |
| Commodity market analysis (INT) | 25 | 16 |
| Physical logistics or storage (LOG) | 37 | 17 |
| Commodity contract or terms handling (CTR) | 29 | 11 |
| Shipment, document or settlement execution (EXE) | 23 | 18 |
| Credit, payment or working-capital process (FIN) | 6 | 7 |
| Commodity price-risk method or scoped knowledge (RSK) | 14 | 13 |
| Grain grade or quality control (QLT) | 7 | 0 |
Each cell counts distinct requisitions that explicitly state a topic; one role may appear in several rows. These are counts in a purposive, employer-concentrated sample, not estimates of U.S. hiring prevalence. The C column is relevant comparison work, not evidence of grain-specific prevalence. RSK includes duties and separately labelled knowledge or trainee assistance, not a count of authorized hedgers. FIN includes payment, receivables or credit-process work and does not mean that every counted job requires a letter of credit. Repeated employer titles and descriptions can affect any count.
Price risk and payment work also separate. The Tyson grain buyer is assigned hedge transactions and daily bids. The POET grain-merchandising intern assists with policy-bound hedging and may either know or learn CBOT, basis and carrying-cost concepts. A Bartlett grain originator reports purchases to hedging staff, an explicit handoff rather than personal hedge placement. Topflight's grain originator handles grain settlements and customer payments, while Perdue Agrifeed customer service resolves receivable and settlement issues. None makes a beginner the bank, credit or risk approver.
Several sources are clearly specialist or adjacent. A GROWMARK/MID-CO commodity risk consultant places client futures and options orders under specialist registration conditions. A Bunge freight trader charters dry-bulk freight and assists with freight or bunker hedges; freight exposure is distinct from crop-price exposure. A POET market analyst researches grain, livestock and feedstuff markets without an assigned hedge-execution mandate. A CHS crop-nutrient trading analyst models supply, demand and scenarios in an adjacent product market. One Bunge logistics vacancy names GAFTA only as preferred knowledge. These examples do not establish letters of credit, factoring, satellite monitoring, FOSFA or Euronext as broadly required U.S. vacancy skills.
Canada: merchant decisions, transaction control and physical movement
The Canadian stratum has 10 principal roles and two frontline grain/facility context roles, all current employer vacancies in the same-day review. Five principal roles are from Cargill and five from Bunge, so two employers dominate the sample. One principal record is a summer 2027 trading internship; two principal roles are senior physical logistics rather than merchant posts. These distinctions matter more than the count alone.
Commercial and customer-facing work appears in Cargill's Grain Origination Representative and Grain Advisory Representative, and Bunge's separate Grenfell and Canora customer-account requisitions. The text supports local market interpretation, producer relationships, grain offers and contracts, transaction records, coordination and escalation. The two Bunge postings share a territory-role template, so repeated wording is not independent evidence of broad prevalence. Cargill's Customer Service Representative is a transaction-support role involving delivery schedules, contracts, invoicing, settlements and payment records; it does not state merchant pricing or credit approval.
The Commodity Trading Intern links supply-demand and market analysis to price, quality, quantity, transport, timing and payment terms and contract coordination. It is useful evidence of an entry pathway, but a future-start internship must not be treated as an experienced merchant job. The Trade Execution Specialist separately asks for international bulk-vessel execution, nominations, shipping instructions, export/customs documents and risk escalation. This supports documentary and logistics skill without establishing a named GAFTA/FOSFA form, L/C, demurrage calculation or a particular Incoterms® rule.
Bunge's Montreal Merchandiser explicitly covers working capital, basis and flat positions, futures positions, cash/futures forward markets and credit requirements. It places premium and moderate-risk decisions within approved limits and seeks assistance for key decisions. This is a senior, single-commodity example of price-risk authority, not a licence for every novice to execute a hedge. Bunge's Vancouver Grain Superintendent connects vessel loading, stow plans, cargo availability and specifications; its Bécancour Logistics Supervisor covers truck/rail movement, storage and inventory reporting. The two additional facility/receiving roles are physical-context evidence only and are not counted as commercial trade authority. Nothing in this sample makes one Canadian province's grain-grading process a worldwide rule.
United Kingdom: heterogeneous physical and financial roles
The UK stratum contains 11 distinct principal current roles across nine employers and one context-only dairy analyst. It includes trainee and junior work, grain origination, feed/co-product and flour purchasing, planning, port operations, and two specialist agricultural derivatives/OTC roles. The Wynnstay trainee vacancy is one current requisition and is counted once.
Trade-support and physical-work examples are distinct. Bunge Junior Trade Support asks for position reconciliation, contracts, procurement P&L support and market statistics, while its Operations Lead is port and warehouse grain movement, stock and vessel paperwork. ForFarmers Planner concerns raw-material delivery schedules, purchase orders, contract changes, quality claims and storage/haulage costs. Charles Jackson's Farm Trading Coordinator is an entry/training-supported coordination and record-update role. Openfield's Farm Business Manager is producer relationship and grain/oilseed/pulse purchasing work.
Procurement roles broaden the field without becoming evidence of bulk export practice. Harbro's Category Manager — Raw Materials buys cereals, grains and distillery co-products, negotiates supply agreements and manages continuity and sourcing risk. Its three possible UK bases are one job. Solina's Flour Buyer, R-890 covers flour specifications, volumes, supplier agreements, forecast and origin/harvest analysis, with Incoterms knowledge in its requested profile. Flour is a processed cereal; this posting alone says nothing about grain-vessel demurrage or trade-finance execution. Wynnstay asks a trainee to hand trade details to forwarding and administration, make reports, monitor credit limits and escalate irregularities, without stating independent credit-setting authority.
The Oil Brokerage agricultural derivatives role explicitly names CBOT and Euronext MATIF, futures/options, basis and physical cargo exposure. Marex Agricultural OTC Sales concerns structured price-risk solutions and client controls in a regulated business. Both are experienced financial-market adjacencies, not proof that a physical-trade coordinator must execute derivatives or hold the same permissions. The UK sample does not establish routine GAFTA/FOSFA, L/C or demurrage requirements across its roles.
Singapore: shipment execution, bank interfaces and specialist controls
The Singapore principal stratum contains 10 agricultural commodity roles and four reserve/context records. It spans employer vacancies, employer-linked recruitment, and anonymous recruiter roles; the latter reduce certainty about employer duplication beyond visible identities. One live specialist recruiter listing, SG-10, is about six months old. Excluding that freshness-sensitive listing leaves nine stronger-freshness principal roles. This is a robustness check on the inventory, not a population estimate.
Physical movement and document control are clear but differentiated. COFCO's Freight Trading Assistant covers vessel positioning, nominations, voyage estimates and freight exposure reports. COFCO's Operations Executive addresses cargo nominations, laytime, payment security and L/C checks, and explicitly names FOSFA/PORAM knowledge. Agrocorp's Operation Executive asks for L/C-consistent shipping-document sets and bulk-vessel coordination; intensive ICC L/C-rule experience is required, whereas GAFTA/FOSFA and Incoterms knowledge is listed as preferred. The grains-and-oilseeds execution recruiter role also names shipment, documentary and settlement coordination, but its client is undisclosed. Named standards belong to these particular source statements, not to every Singapore trade job.
Other roles sit outside physical execution. CHS Senior Trade Structured Finance Specialist is an experienced financing and bank-terms role. Randstad's soft-commodities support analyst maintains contracts and assists pricing and credit processes, while its cotton trading analyst builds supply-demand models and weekly insights with programming skill. The agricultural credit-risk general manager concerns counterparty limits, margin and escalation at senior leadership level. The grains/oilseeds futures broker is a specialist client-order role with the age caveat above. None establishes beginner authority to approve bank finance, set credit limits or place client orders.
Louis Dreyfus Company's Operational Control Analyst, G&O monitors SEA grains-and-oilseeds positions, weekly P&L and FX exposure and supports monthly close. The employer vacancy displayed an application route on 14 October 2026; subsequent access to its exact detail page was intermittent, a limitation for later source replay. The employer header says five to eight years of experience while the body says at least three; that contradiction must remain visible. The role is position control and reporting, not autonomous trading approval.
Cross-market interpretation and subject evidence
Across the four separate country samples, source-linked roles may interpret a dated market input, check the agreed commodity and quality, coordinate physical movement, maintain transaction records, and route exceptions to the person with relevant authority. That is a qualitative synthesis of specific roles, not a single worldwide work standard or pooled rate. Commercial origination, vessel operations, position control, bank-facing trade finance and client derivative execution are distinct jobs. Entry personnel may prepare records and identify discrepancies; a senior merchant, port supervisor, credit owner, bank or regulated broker has different approval rights.
Supply-demand and price discovery are explicit in selected trading, merchant and analyst vacancies. Physical logistics and quality appear in grain storage, port, feed-planning and vessel-execution roles. Contract and document work appears in several countries, but named standards and Incoterms knowledge are attached to particular postings. Letters of credit appear in certain Singapore execution and specialist-finance roles; factoring is not established as a broadly requested skill in these country samples. Basis, futures and options appear in senior merchants, specialist brokers or bounded internship exposure, with different task authority. CBOT appears in selected U.S. records; the UK specialist brokerage posting names both CBOT and Euronext MATIF. Neither exchange name is a universal entry requirement. Forecasting appears in particular analyst roles, while satellite estimation and USDA releases belong chiefly to dated contextual evidence, not a demonstrated common software requirement in the vacancies.
Limits, rights and decision boundaries
These point-in-time samples omit closed, unpublished or inaccessible vacancies. Employer concentration and repeated templates can amplify wording; UK occupations are heterogeneous; Singapore recruiter anonymity and the older live broker listing weaken some identity and freshness assurance. Three U.S. context roles lack a direct principal trade-task fit, and the one excluded U.S. role has an unresolved worksite. The U.S. employer counts and role composition describe this selected corpus only. No country result establishes a national hiring rate or validates another country's practice.
GAFTA and FOSFA contract forms and ICC Incoterms® and letter-of-credit rules are referenced only at the level a specific employer vacancy states; their protected text is not reproduced. Exchange quotes, charts and order books are not reproduced. A real contract, bank instrument, credit limit or hedge is governed by the relevant employer process and authorized legal, banking or risk decision maker. A vacancy describes a role; it does not itself grant authority to act.
