## Professional Certificate in Software Engineering Management

Lead software teams through people decisions, delivery trade-offs, architecture choices, technical debt, service reliability and responsible AI-assisted work. This practical certificate turns current employer evidence into a repeatable management approach built around clear authority, usable records, accepted handoffs and verified follow-through.

Across four modules, you will create twenty workplace-ready artifacts. Each lesson combines clear theory, a realistic software-team case, a reusable template, a completed example and guided AI practice that keeps decisions and verification under human control.

## Who this course is for

The course is designed for new and developing software engineering managers, technical leads moving into people leadership, delivery-focused engineering managers and team leaders who coordinate technical decisions.

No formal management title is required. Basic familiarity with software teams, product delivery and technical discussions is helpful; specialist architecture, security, privacy, people or data expertise is not assumed. You will learn how to identify the correct decision owner and involve accountable specialists when work crosses your authority.

## What you will be able to do

You will clarify your management authority and working relationships, prepare specific feedback, support development, plan fair staffing and guide cross-team dependencies toward an accepted decision or escalation.

You will make priority trade-offs, build dependency-aware delivery plans, diagnose review capacity, define measures that support decisions and prepare safe release and rollback paths.

You will record architecture decisions, map system context and technical trade-offs, review whether guidance remains current, prioritize technical debt and give specialists the evidence and decision context they need to act.

You will use service-health evidence, coordinate incidents, turn findings into verified improvement, set responsible boundaries for AI-assisted engineering and build a daily, weekly, periodic and event-driven management rhythm.

## Curriculum

### Module 4 — Run Reliable Services and an Effective Management Rhythm

16. **Make Decisions from Service Health Evidence** — create a Service Health Decision Brief.
17. **Coordinate Incidents with Clear Roles and Evidence** — maintain an Incident Command and Evidence Log.
18. **Turn Incidents into Lasting Improvement** — create a Post-Incident Learning and Action Tracker.
19. **Set Boundaries for AI-Assisted Engineering** — produce an AI-Assisted Engineering Use-Case Control Card.
20. **Build an Effective Engineering Management Rhythm** — build an Engineering Management Operating Rhythm Board.

## How the course works

Every lesson combines applied theory with AI Practice. You work through the fictional Northstar Systems case, create a reusable workplace artifact, inspect a completed example, use a focused drafting prompt and a separate critic prompt, and verify the result with professional judgment. Every task also includes a no-AI route.

The operating sequence moves from a registered trigger through authority and risk classification, evidence, options and a recorded decision, controlled execution, real-state verification and closure with learning and follow-up.

## Applied capstone

Harborview Labs is planning a customer-facing release in four weeks. Reviewer capacity is constrained, a Platform-owned identity-service change is late, intermittent export failures have affected customers and an AI engineering assistant is being considered without approved boundaries.

You will recommend the next four weeks of engineering management action and prepare one **Software Engineering Management Action Brief**. The brief sets priorities, fits available capacity, clarifies decision ownership, organizes delivery and specialist handoffs, protects service health and defines release, rollback, AI-control, review and escalation points.

## Professional resources

The course includes three readable role resources: a model Software Engineering Manager job description, an ATS-friendly resume template with a clearly fictional example, and a Software Engineering Manager Operating Playbook. Together they help you understand role expectations, describe evidence truthfully and adapt the trigger-to-close workflow to an organization’s approved policies and systems.

## Certificate

After completing the required learning activities and capstone, you receive the MTF Institute Certificate of completion: Professional Certificate in Software Engineering Management.

## Evidence behind the course

MTF Institute built this curriculum from an independently reviewed study of 100 current U.S. Engineering Manager vacancies and a separate review of current changes in engineering management work. The evidence supports an integrated focus on people leadership, delivery, architecture decisions, technical debt, reliability, incident practice, cross-functional coordination and responsible AI-assisted work.
