## Professional Certificate in Robotics Product Management

Move from consumer robotics to industrial automation with evidence-led market choices, ROS 2 integration literacy, controlled field deployment and a defensible commercial offer.

## Who this course is for

Designed for people who must connect robotics technology with a customer job, field evidence and a commercial decision.

- Aspiring robotics product manager
- Connected-hardware product manager
- Robotics engineer moving into product
- Industrial automation commercial lead

## What you will be able to do

Learn to connect a real user job to technical evidence, a supported hardware-software system and a viable route to market. The course turns robotics complexity into six practical product-management capabilities.

- **Market and job discovery.** Map users, sponsors and buyers; observe the work and choose a bounded use case.
- **Requirements and roadmap.** Write observable requirements, acceptance criteria and evidence-led tradeoffs.
- **System integration.** Map hardware, software, service and versioned interfaces, including conditional ROS 2 compatibility.
- **Prototype-to-field evidence.** Separate simulation, bench and site results; design pilots with stop and recovery rules.
- **Deployment handoffs.** Route installation, training, service and specialist questions to the people who own them.
- **Commercial learning.** Test offer assumptions, unit economics, launch readiness, adoption and field feedback.

## Curriculum

The course has four modules and twenty full applied lessons. Each lesson teaches one workplace method and leads to one distinct artifact; the final capstone asks for one product decision memo.

### Module 1 — Market Discovery and Product Strategy

A promising robot feature starts with a person's job and a buyer's decision. You will identify both, observe the current work and choose a use case worth testing. You will compare consumer and industrial routes, test a specific value promise and recommend the next reversible investment using the evidence you actually have.

- **Identify the People and Jobs Behind a Robot Request.** Separate user, operator, economic buyer, integrator and service owner for a bounded physical-robot opportunity. Practical output: Stakeholder-and-job map with interview guide.
- **Observe the Work and Establish a Baseline.** Verify a reported manual-task summary and plan matched observations before making a quantified benefit claim. Practical output: Field-observation and baseline record.
- **Choose a Consumer or Industrial Use Case.** Segment consumer, industrial and field uses by job, environment, buyer route and support burden; choose a target use case. Practical output: Segment-and-use-case comparison.
- **Compare Alternatives and Define a Testable Promise.** Compare competitors and substitutes and state a narrow, testable product value promise. Practical output: Alternatives-and-value proposition brief.
- **Make an Evidence-Based Opportunity Decision.** Turn conditional site interest and explicit buyer and funding gaps into a reversible validation request. Practical output: Opportunity decision brief.

### Module 2 — Requirements and Hardware-Software Decisions

A robotics promise must work across hardware, software, interfaces and service. You will write requirements and acceptance criteria that make the promised outcome testable. You will map the system, ask precise version and ROS 2 compatibility questions when relevant, and decide which product work should come first.

- **Turn the Job into Product Requirements.** Trace proposed robot behavior to a reported task and identify the observation and route evidence still needed. Practical output: Problem statement and requirements draft.
- **Write Acceptance Criteria for Robot Behavior.** Define acceptance criteria for robot behavior, human intervention, recovery and site conditions. Practical output: Acceptance-criteria and evidence table.
- **Map the Hardware, Software and Service System.** Map one complete hardware-software-data-service system and identify interfaces, dependencies and owners. Practical output: System-boundary and interface map.
- **Check Versioned Interfaces and ROS 2 Compatibility.** Record supported configurations, version compatibility, update and rollback ownership, using ROS 2 when the actual stack requires it. Practical output: Hardware-software compatibility matrix.
- **Prioritize the Roadmap and Record Tradeoffs.** Prioritize roadmap options across buyer value, feasibility, reliability, cost, dependencies and reversibility. Practical output: Prioritized roadmap and tradeoff record.

### Module 3 — Validation, Deployment and Specialist Handoffs

A successful demonstration is one step toward a working product. You will compare prototype, lab and site evidence and design a controlled customer pilot. You will respond to failures, plan deployment and support handoffs, and route market-access and other specialist questions before advancing a claim.

- **Plan Evidence from Prototype to Field.** Plan a staged evidence path from prototype and simulation through lab, pilot and field acceptance. Practical output: Staged validation plan.
- **Design a Controlled Customer Pilot.** Design a bounded field pilot with site owner, operating conditions, intervention log and stop/recovery criteria. Practical output: Pilot charter and field-evidence log.
- **Respond to Failures and Recovery Gaps.** Translate reliability and failure evidence into product decisions and escalation, with human recovery and service consequences. Practical output: Failure-impact and escalation decision note.
- **Hand Off Deployment and Support.** Identify the receiving owners and pending work needed before a halted trial can resume or a product can be deployed. Practical output: Deployment-and-support handoff checklist.
- **Route Specialist Reviews and Market-Access Questions.** Stage engineering, site, safety, security, privacy and U.S. market-access reviews without claiming specialist authority. Practical output: Specialist gate and approval register.

### Module 4 — Commercialization and Product Learning

A robot becomes a product when its buyer, package, deployment and ongoing support make sense together. You will compare commercial routes and test how service costs affect the offer. You will make a launch decision from evidence, define useful post-launch measures and respond to field feedback with a documented product change.

- **Design the Offer, Channel and Pricing Hypothesis.** Compare industrial and home routes while confirming buyer, procurement, service and price authority. Practical output: Commercial offer hypothesis.
- **Test Unit Economics and Support Sensitivity.** Estimate product unit economics including hardware, installation, operations, service, warranty and lifecycle cost. Practical output: Unit-economics and sensitivity worksheet.
- **Make a Launch Readiness Decision.** Set launch evidence, customer promise, internal readiness and go/conditional-go/revise/stop decision. Practical output: Launch-readiness decision record.
- **Measure Adoption and Product Performance.** Use a clearly hypothetical approved deployment to define cohort, intervention and support measures. Practical output: Product KPI and post-launch review scorecard.
- **Use Field Feedback to Revise the Product.** Respond to a hypothetical post-approval bridge update with owners, containment and review criteria. Practical output: Post-launch change decision memo.

## Applied capstone

The operations manager at Harbor's packaging site asks the product team to consider a larger HC4 deployment after a bounded preliminary site run; this person has not been confirmed as the economic buyer or spending approver. An interface revision has bench evidence, but two of the first 20 planned field handoffs fail after bridge restart, so the field lead halts and 40 planned transfers are unrun. The operations manager asks for a delivery estimate; support cost is uncertain and a resumed run needs engineering recovery evidence and new site and safety decisions.

Recommend whether to advance, run a bounded further test, revise the offer or stop, and state evidence and approvals needed. Produce One robotics product decision memo.

## How the course works

Study online at your own pace. The lessons move from market discovery through requirements and system integration, staged validation and deployment handoffs, to offer design, unit economics and product learning. Each lesson includes a worked case, a blank professional template, a completed example, an AI drafting prompt, a critic prompt and a human quality check. Use only information you may share with a tool, and confirm the result against the relevant source and decision owner.

The Role Starter Pack contains three additional readable course pages: a model job description for a robotics product manager, an ATS-friendly resume template with a complete example, and a model role operating playbook.
