## Professional Certificate in RAG, Enterprise Search & Knowledge Systems

Build a small, testable enterprise-search and grounded-answer feature from permitted sources. Learn to define an information task, prepare traceable source material, compare retrieval methods, check answer claims against exact passages, test changes in access, and hand measured results to accountable owners.

The course uses one fictional workplace, Pinehaven Design Cooperative, to connect source decisions, search behavior, a local offline lab and an applied contractor-guidance case. Across four modules and 20 lessons, you practise a complete operating sequence instead of treating indexing, retrieval, generation and evaluation as isolated tasks.

## What you will be able to do

By the end of the course, you will be able to:

- define an information task, user identity, expected source and observable success condition;
- inventory source versions, owners, processing rights and access rules before designing an index;
- inspect document extraction, preserve traceable passages and test source updates;
- compare lexical, semantic and hybrid retrieval against judged questions while retaining access filters;
- assemble a small permission-aware answer path with claim-level source and version trace;
- measure relevance, answer support, access behavior, freshness, delay and cost with separate test cases;
- select a supported answer, a bounded retry, an insufficiency response or escalation from the evidence; and
- hand a reproducible defect record and release decision packet to the responsible source, identity and service owners.

## Who this course is for

This professional certificate is for early-career and transitioning enterprise-search, AI, knowledge-systems, platform and application professionals. It is suited to people who prepare information sources, build or integrate retrieval, evaluate grounded answers, or support a knowledge service. The supplied case, templates and local offline lab provide a concrete route through the work.

## Curriculum

### Module 1 — Define the information task and its boundaries

Frame the user request and the decision the search service should support. Inventory the fictional case sources, name owners and versions, map access for different identities, inspect source formats, and prepare a prebuild handoff for unresolved rights or policy questions.

1. **Clarify the search task** — create an information-task brief.
2. **Establish source authority and permitted use** — create a source authority-and-rights register.
3. **Map users to source access** — create an identity–source permission matrix.
4. **Specify what the corpus needs** — create a corpus intake specification.
5. **Route a prebuild decision** — create a prebuild decision-and-handoff record.

### Module 2 — Prepare trustworthy, current source material

Choose a source route, inspect extraction fidelity and passage design, validate searchable fields and filters, then diagnose a failed update against the supplied freshness rule.

6. **Choose how a source is reached** — create a source-route comparison sheet.
7. **Check document extraction** — create a document-extraction QA log.
8. **Design traceable passages** — create a passage-and-metadata design sheet.
9. **Validate a searchable index** — create an index validation record.
10. **Diagnose a failed source update** — create a freshness and recovery test card.

### Module 3 — Retrieve evidence and assemble grounded answers

Establish a judged lexical baseline, compare semantic retrieval, select a retrieval family, test one ranking change, and run a small answer path that carries the requester identity through retrieval and citation lookup.

11. **Establish a judged search baseline** — create a lexical baseline results sheet.
12. **Compare semantic retrieval** — create a semantic retrieval comparison.
13. **Choose a retrieval family** — create a hybrid/family selection memo.
14. **Test one ranking change** — create a ranking-change experiment record.
15. **Build an answer path with source trace** — create an executable grounded-answer prototype.

### Module 4 — Evaluate, protect and hand off the service

Keep separate tests for relevance, claim support, access changes and insufficient evidence. Reproduce a wrong answer and a stale-sync alert, then assemble evidence for a release and operating handoff.

16. **Build a regression case set** — create a versioned full evaluation-case set.
17. **Check each claim against its passage** — create a claim–evidence adjudication ledger.
18. **Test access changes end to end** — create an access regression result set.
19. **Decide when evidence is insufficient** — create an insufficient-evidence decision protocol.
20. **Hand off measured results and feedback** — create a release-and-operating handoff packet.

## Applied capstone

At Pinehaven Design Cooperative, a contractor asks whether they may self-enroll a replacement laptop and what the helpdesk should do after a failed attempt. A plausible answer cites a current employee policy, while contractor guidance, a retired quick-start, restricted material and a limited vendor source create different evidence and access boundaries.

Create one **Contractor Guidance Decision Brief** for the helpdesk service owner. Check consequential claims against current permitted passages, run the supplied offline access and citation checks, compare an unsafe candidate with a supportable path, and route unresolved policy, identity and service questions to their owners. Your principal deliverable records permitted source routes, claim-to-passage findings, before-and-after test evidence, a limited helpdesk response or insufficiency, and owner-specific decisions.

## How the course works

The course is online, self-paced and in English. Study time is **Up to 1 month**. Four modules contain 20 applied lessons and one separate capstone. Each lesson connects a professional purpose to five practical steps and a named deliverable. The supplied source cards, templates and local offline lab let you inspect behavior and record evidence without production system access.

AI-assisted drafting and challenge appear where appropriate. Learners verify source rights, user access, exact cited passages, versions, answer states and human decisions against the case records and local checks.

## Certificate

Completing the course learning activities and applied capstone provides an MTF Institute professional course-completion certificate for **Professional Certificate in RAG, Enterprise Search & Knowledge Systems**.

## Evidence behind the course

The curriculum draws on current analysis of 105 public U.S.-eligible vacancies, an independent article on enterprise search practice and the corrected open research archive. The sources inform the learning design and give learners a route to inspect the evidence.
