## Professional Certificate in First-Line Management

A practical online professional certificate for new managers and team leaders who need to convert goals into reliable team execution during their first 90 days and beyond.

The course develops practical capability in goal setting, weekly planning, delegation, one-to-one meetings, feedback, coaching, workload and staffing decisions, performance review, escalation, service recovery and responsible AI use. Across four modules and twenty applied lessons, each learner creates one reusable professional artifact per lesson and completes a decision-ready team stabilisation capstone.

## Curriculum

### Starting Strong: Role, Goals and Team Rhythm

Build a practical first-90-day plan, define clear goals and measures, set priorities, and create dependable huddles and handoffs.

1. **Build Your First 90-Day Management Plan** — Create a sequenced plan for discovery, operating rhythm, bounded practice, improvement and review. Primary artifact: First 90-Day Management Plan.
2. **Shift from Individual Contributor to Team Leader** — Separate personal work from people-lead work and clarify routine decisions, consultations and escalations. Primary artifact: New-Manager Role and Boundaries Map.
3. **Turn Goals into Measures the Team Can Use** — Define a controllable result with outcome, quality and workload evidence plus an adjustment rule. Primary artifact: Goal and Measure Sheet.
4. **Plan and Prioritise a Week of Team Work** — Balance demand, capacity, dependency, risk and visible trade-offs. Primary artifact: Weekly Team Work Plan.
5. **Run Huddles and Handoffs Across Work Locations** — Facilitate a focused huddle and leave an asynchronous record another shift or location can act on. Primary artifact: Huddle and Handoff Record.

### Delegation, One-to-Ones and Development

Delegate for results, hold useful one-to-one meetings, give fair feedback, coach improvement and build skills through everyday work.

6. **Delegate Results, Boundaries and Follow-Through** — Agree an outcome, decision boundaries, resources, checkpoints and accepted ownership. Primary artifact: Delegation Brief.
7. **Hold One-to-One Meetings That Lead to Action** — Prepare a focused conversation, listen, clarify actions and protect appropriate confidentiality. Primary artifact: One-to-One Action Record.
8. **Give Clear, Timely and Fair Feedback** — Use observable behaviour and impact, invite the employee's view and agree a proportionate next step. Primary artifact: Feedback Conversation Plan.
9. **Coach Improvement Through Questions and Practice** — Diagnose the performance need, ask useful questions and agree a bounded practice-and-review cycle. Primary artifact: Coaching Practice Plan.
10. **Build Skills Through Stretch Work and Follow-Up** — Match a stretch assignment to readiness, define support and check evidence before increasing responsibility. Primary artifact: Stretch Assignment and Development Plan.

### Staffing, Performance and Improvement

Plan fair coverage, onboard people, read a small team scorecard, diagnose variance and respond appropriately to workload and well-being signals.

11. **Plan Fair Coverage and Sustainable Workloads** — Allocate work against demand, capacity, critical skills, fairness and service risk. Primary artifact: Team Coverage and Workload Plan.
12. **Onboard People and Confirm Readiness** — Sequence orientation, guided practice, observation and readiness confirmation without assuming capability. Primary artifact: New-Starter Readiness Plan.
13. **Read a Small Team Scorecard** — Interpret a balanced measure set while checking definitions, trends, context and data limits. Primary artifact: Team Performance Scorecard.
14. **Diagnose Variance and Choose Corrective Action** — Separate fact from hypothesis, test likely causes and select a bounded action with a review rule. Primary artifact: Root-Cause Action Note.
15. **Respond to Workload and Well-Being Signals** — Use respectful work-focused inquiry, adjust priorities within role and route support appropriately. Primary artifact: Workload and Clarity Review.

### Safe Decisions, Service and Responsible Technology

Protect safety, quality and service, make sound decisions within your role, escalate clearly and use AI without replacing human judgement.

16. **Protect Safety, Quality and Standard Work** — Recognise a trigger, contain within training, preserve facts and complete a specialist handoff. Primary artifact: Safety and Quality Response Checklist.
17. **Handle Service Problems and Stakeholder Escalations** — Stabilise the immediate need, coordinate recovery and keep one reliable update route through closure. Primary artifact: Service Recovery Plan.
18. **Separate Your Decisions from Approvals and Escalations** — Check delegated limits, take appropriate stabilising action and request a specific decision from the right owner. Primary artifact: Escalation Brief.
19. **Use AI Responsibly in People-Management Work** — Screen the tool, task, data and decision impact while keeping consequential people decisions human-owned. Primary artifact: Responsible AI Task Screen.
20. **Review the First 90 Days and Set the Next Priorities** — Summarise results, capability, workload, risk and three justified next priorities. Primary artifact: 90-Day Operating Review.

## Applied Capstone: Stabilise a Team and Restore Delivery

Apply the course to stabilise a pressured team, restore delivery and present one decision-ready plan with clear priorities, people support, measures and escalation.

## Evidence base

The curriculum was audited against 101 current United States vacancy observations and a separate current-trends corpus. The evidence is available through the MTF Institute vacancy study, the independent trends article and the open Zenodo record with DOI 10.5281/zenodo.22727719.

The vacancy evidence is a structured, purposive, point-in-time sample rather than a census or hiring forecast. It was used to identify recurring work, outputs, interfaces and boundaries for a new first-line manager. The separate trends corpus was used to test what has changed in the operating environment, including hybrid coordination, workload visibility, skills development, employee expectations and responsible use of AI. Neither evidence source predicts course demand or an individual learner's employment outcome.

Every lesson uses an entirely fictional learning case or information that the learner is authorised to use. The methods do not replace employer policy, HR, legal, medical, safety, privacy or other specialist judgement. They teach a first-line manager to work within delegated authority, protect people and information, make a complete handoff and retain human ownership of consequential decisions.
