## Abstract

This study asks what U.S. manufacturing employers explicitly ask a shift supervisor or working team leader to do, and how far a vacancy can establish the person's authority. It reviews 101 distinct suitable employer or authorized applicant-tracking-system postings observed on 16 October 2026. The purposive sample contains 95 supervisory or supervisor-titled roles and six explicit working team-lead roles. It is not a census of U.S. openings, a measure of work actually performed or a representative estimate of employer demand.

Observable coaching or feedback is explicit in 63 of the 101 postings. The separately defined shift-start briefing, actual cross-shift handover and named-method concepts have their own assessable denominators, shown below. These counts describe only what the sampled advertisements state. They do not measure whether an unstated practice is absent at a plant. The research therefore separates work assignment from formal staffing authority, ordinary production communication from a cross-shift handover, a quality concern from final product disposition, and participation in a personnel process from final disciplinary authority.

## Occupational boundary and question

The U.S. [O*NET description of first-line supervisors of production and operating workers](https://www.onetonline.org/link/summary/51-1011.00) describes direct supervision and coordination of production workers and expressly excludes team or work leaders from that occupation. This is occupational context, not a second vacancy dataset. Our sample accordingly keeps its six explicitly working team-lead positions separate from the 95 supervisory-track positions. A job title alone does not establish direct reports, authority to hire or discipline, or authority to release nonconforming product.

The research question is narrower than “what should every shift leader do?”: **Which duties, outputs, methods, interfaces, qualifications and authority boundaries are expressly stated in accessible current-at-observation U.S. vacancies for these two role tracks?** The separately published [current-changes analysis](https://mtfinstitute.com/insights/us-manufacturing-shift-leadership-changes-2026/) uses independent recent evidence and contributes no observations to the counts in this report.

## Scope and method

The source ledger retains 101 unique accepted posting URLs, U.S. worksite evidence, role descriptions, application controls, source dates and short source-specific anchors. Employer or authorized applicant-tracking pages were checked on 16 October 2026. Twenty varied pages were reopened on 18 October as a read-back check; this does not establish that all 101 remained open on 18 October. Where a page did not give a posting date, the study does not call it a newly posted vacancy. Duplicate requisition aliases and out-of-scope roles were excluded before the 101-row cohort was fixed. Later closure cannot retroactively negate a documented 16 October observation.

Each posting was coded across duties, work products, hard methods, observable behavior, tools, qualifications and their required or preferred status, cadence, interfaces, authority, and escalation. A predeclared 85-concept catalog was assessed against every accepted posting. Each concept-row judgment is one of: explicitly mentioned with a same-page phrase; reviewed but unstated in the available text; ambiguous; or not assessed/source unavailable for the relevant field. A posting is counted once per concept even if it mentions the concept repeatedly. Source-specific terms and unpooled practices remain in a searchable long-tail ledger. A reviewed-but-unstated code means only that the available advertisement did not state the narrowly defined requirement; it is not a negative employer answer.

The denominator changes by concept when wording is ambiguous or a relevant field cannot be assessed. The table reports **E of Y assessable sampled postings explicitly mentioning a concept, with Z unresolved**. Y plus Z equals 101 in every row. Concepts with unlike Y should not be ranked by their fractions. No table value estimates national prevalence or the share of operating plants using a method. The working-lead stratum has only six observations; pooled counts are descriptive, not an assertion of equal authority across tracks.

## Selected explicit statements in the sample

| Narrow concept in the posting text | Explicit E | Assessable Y | Unresolved Z |
| --- | ---: | ---: | ---: |
| Observable coaching or feedback | 63 | 101 | 0 |
| Manufacturing or production experience stated as a qualification option | 52 | 101 | 0 |
| Assigning work to people | 24 | 93 | 8 |
| Actual cross-shift handover duty | 8 | 95 | 6 |
| Shift-start briefing duty | 5 | 97 | 4 |
| Response to employee concerns or conflict | 9 | 93 | 8 |
| Safety compliance duty | 27 | 99 | 2 |
| Hazard, near-miss or incident response duty | 21 | 100 | 1 |
| Nonconformance or deviation work | 12 | 101 | 0 |
| Explicit 5S or 6S method | 31 | 93 | 8 |
| Explicit 5-Why method | 3 | 91 | 10 |
| Explicit OEE metric | 2 | 90 | 11 |
| Formal line-balancing method | 3 | 90 | 11 |

These are source-text mention counts, not claims that the skills are universally required. “Manufacturing experience” includes explicitly stated qualification options and must not be read as 52 mandatory requirements. The safety and quality concepts distinguish an assigned duty from a final approval right. The method rows count a named method or metric, not a broad synonym. The working-lead and supervisor strata, source IDs, unknown IDs and exact anchors are retained in the internal matrix for every reportable concept.

## Running the shift and carrying work across it

The sample contains distinct forms of operating work. [Sofidel's PM-shift supervisor role](https://careers.sofidel.com/job/Inola-PM-Shift-Supervisor-OK-74036/1365791057/) and [LightForce's manufacturing role](https://job-boards.greenhouse.io/lightforceorthodontics/jobs/5142795007?gh_src=5b1774f37us) are examples supporting actual handover duties. A meeting, a general “pass down” to another department or a report about the shift was not automatically coded as an incoming/outgoing-shift handover. A named handover record also has a separate, stricter output definition. The cited pages do not establish a universal record format, escalation time or next-shift owner; these depend on employer procedures.

Work assignment likewise differs from formal authority over headcount. [Component Repair Technologies' supervisor posting](https://jobs.lever.co/componentrepairtechnologies/5b6ca391-e929-4a60-952f-dab69d4fa4c3) explicitly describes adjusting job assignments; that supports directing work but not an inference that the same person may hire, discipline, redesign a line or change a regulated process. A leader can check the plan, available material, equipment state and demonstrated operator skill before assigning work, then escalate decisions that exceed the role's authority. That is an applied operating implication, not an outcome measured by these vacancies.

## People, safety and quality boundaries

[The Marzetti Company's supervisor role](https://careers.marzetticompany.com/our-company/jobs/7991?lang=en-us) illustrates direct supervision, coaching and employee-relations concerns on one page. [AHEAD's assembly-supervisor posting](https://jobs.lever.co/thinkahead/93b11dd8-a394-4aa0-ae38-81ccdd082e2a) expressly assigns resolution of employee issues. Neither example alone establishes that a shift leader has final disciplinary authority under a different employer's HR process. The matrix keeps personnel-process administration, recommendations and final decisions distinct, and leaves the latter unclaimed when the advertisement is inconclusive.

[OPmobility's production-supervision role](https://careers.opmobility.com/job/Adrian-Michigan-SITE-MANUFACTURING-PRODUCTION-SUPERVISION-TECHNICIAN-MI/1446544333/) names action when a quality or safety issue arises. [Gestamp's shift-supervisor role](https://jobs.gestamp.com/job/US-Gestamp-South-Carolina-3rd-Shift-Supervisor-Union%2C-SC-SC-US-Gestamp/1444473033/) illustrates accident or incident reporting and operational-data reporting. A duty to identify or respond to a nonconformance is not evidence of permission to release, reject or physically dispose of the affected product. Safe operating examples should therefore show the current restriction, record, authorized decision owner and next check rather than assume a universal supervisor approval.

## Named methods: useful, but not interchangeable

The sample explicitly names 5S or 6S in 31 of 93 assessable postings, OEE in two of 90 and formal line balancing in three of 90. These are separate narrow concept tests in a purposive sample; their counts do not rank market demand or adoption. [Marzetti's posting](https://careers.marzetticompany.com/our-company/jobs/7991?lang=en-us) names both 5S and OEE; [Owens Corning's production-supervisor posting](https://careers.owenscorning.com/job/Jackson-Production-Supervisor-TN-38301/1416804100/) mentions OEE as a measurement option. [Skydio's manufacturing role](https://jobs.ashbyhq.com/skydio/e5513516-2519-42fa-ab97-69a27756bd63) names line balancing with engineering partnership; a second Skydio requisition contributes another observation but does not represent a second employer.

The distinction matters for education and operations. Moving a person to a station is staffing or flow work unless the posting explicitly calls for line balancing. A general root-cause request does not establish the 5-Why method; [Base Power's investigations role](https://jobs.ashbyhq.com/base-power/4056a557-ff7c-4b64-86f1-45632d652ef6) is one of the few postings that names it. An OEE figure is a plant metric, not a complete diagnosis of downtime, quality loss or staffing constraints. These examples justify teaching the named tools as bounded methods and examples, while keeping local standards, job authority and actual data definitions visible.

## Interpretation and limits

The 101 URLs are distinct posting observations, not 101 employers. The source pages span varied manufacturing settings but were selected for accessible, substantive role detail; there is no probability sample or industry weighting. Employer wording is heterogeneous, six working-team-lead observations are too few for a population comparison, and multiple postings from one organization can share language. A missing named method may mean the employer uses a different term or does not list every duty in its advertisement. A qualification listed as preferred, a broad “or” alternative and a performed duty remain distinct. No source-text count establishes the effectiveness of a practice, current adoption, a training return, a hiring forecast or authority at a particular plant.

For practical preparation, the postings support learning to interpret the plan, people, equipment and open quality or safety issues; communicate specific priorities; coach where assigned; use employer-required records; and route decisions to an authorized owner. The exact duties and authority vary by employer and role. O*NET and the separately published current-changes study supply clearly labelled context. Exact local instructions, labor rules, product disposition and safety procedures remain employer-specific.
