**Resource type:** model job description
**Evidence geography:** United States
**Evidence scope:** 101 distinct suitable U.S. employer or authorized ATS postings observed 16 October 2026: 95 supervisor-track and six working team-lead positions. Purposive sample, not nationally representative. Independent current-changes evidence is separate.
**Accepted source SHA-256:** `09b1015420db20ac35035cf4618692f589523969c21df1fdccbe83d40a72d4fd`

This evidence-derived model helps an employer or learner describe frontline manufacturing shift leadership in clear, observable terms. It is a **template for local adaptation**, not a live vacancy or a policy that applies at every plant. The companion course is **Professional Certificate: Manufacturing Shift Supervisor & Team Leader**. Select the supervisor or working team-lead track before using the model, then specify the site's actual reporting line, systems, qualifications and approval rights.

## Choose the role track first

**Manufacturing Shift Supervisor** is the track for a position that directs a production shift and may have formal direct reports when the employer expressly assigns them. The employer must state its actual span of supervision and any hiring, appraisal or disciplinary role. A supervisor title by itself does not grant those powers.

**Manufacturing Team Leader** is the track for a working lead who supports or directs an assigned team, cell or area within the scope the employer defines. Hands-on production work may also be part of the position; its extent must be stated for the local opening. The employer must name the actual reporting supervisor or manager and the decisions delegated to the lead. Do not convert peer guidance into formal direct-report, hiring or disciplinary authority by changing the title.

The two tracks can share shift-planning, communication, safety, quality and improvement work, but their people-management authority may differ. The employer chooses one track for a particular opening and records any cross-cover arrangement explicitly.

## Ready-to-adapt role description

### Role purpose

For the **Shift Supervisor** track, lead the delegated manufacturing shift toward its approved production, quality and safety objectives. For the **Working Team Leader** track, coordinate the assigned team, cell or area under the locally named supervisor or manager. In either track, help translate the approved plan into work that available, qualified people can perform with the material and equipment on hand, within the duties assigned to this position. Keep abnormal conditions visible, communicate assigned priorities and restrictions clearly, and pass unresolved work to its authorized next owner where handover belongs to the role. Follow the employer's procedures for decisions that affect people, product release, equipment, safety and records.

The role is expected to work on the shop floor as well as with planning information. It connects operators with Production Management, Quality, Maintenance, Engineering, EHS, HR and Materials/Planning when those functions are part of the site's process. The employer specifies which interfaces apply to this position and when to use them.

### Core responsibilities

- Check the assigned shift plan against current orders, material availability, machine status, changeovers, staffing and demonstrated operator qualifications. Surface a gap before assigning affected work.
- Give operators specific tasks and priorities within the authority assigned to this track. Adjust coverage or recommend a change when a constraint appears; document who approved any decision reserved for a manager or specialist.
- Lead or contribute to the start-of-shift priorities conversation where assigned. Make the target, safety and quality restrictions, unusual work, open issues and contact points understandable to the team.
- Monitor actual progress against the approved plan and investigate a significant variance with the people closest to the work. Distinguish a data error, material wait, equipment issue, quality restriction and skill gap before proposing a remedy.
- Carry relevant status across an actual shift handover where the position owns that duty. Identify open orders, affected equipment, suspect product, hazard restrictions, pending decisions, responsible people and the next check. Use the employer's designated communication and record system.
- Coach and give specific feedback on safe work, standard work, quality and performance where the role is assigned to do so. Listen to employee concerns, establish facts fairly and involve HR or management when the situation exceeds the role's remit. Treat a disagreement or missed target as a fact-finding issue, not an automatic conduct accusation.
- Respond to a hazard, near miss, injury, equipment abnormality or quality concern using the site's immediate-action, stop-work, isolation, notification and escalation rules. Protect people and product while the authorized owner assesses the next decision.
- Verify product or process quality to the extent assigned: check against current specifications, identify a nonconformance, preserve traceability and route a hold, deviation or NCR through the approved Quality process. Do not release, reject or dispose of suspect product unless the employer has expressly assigned that decision.
- Maintain or contribute to the shift's required production, downtime, quality, safety, staffing and training information. Record facts, time, status, owner and follow-up in the approved system. Separate a record the role authors or maintains from one it only reviews, supplies or approves.
- Participate in practical improvement work within local controls. Invite operator observations, test the actual cause of a recurring loss, and obtain the right Quality, EHS, Engineering or management approval before changing a controlled process.

### Outputs and evidence of work

The employer identifies which of these outputs the position creates, maintains, reviews or receives. Their names and formats vary by plant:

- a current shift assignment or priority view that shows work owners and known constraints;
- a concise start-of-shift priorities message and, where assigned, a cross-shift status handover;
- production progress or exception information linked to the source record and correct order, line and time;
- a documented downtime, maintenance, material or quality issue with the contact and next action;
- a safety or near-miss notification and any incident record the site assigns to this role;
- a deviation, nonconformance, scrap or suspect-product status routed to the approved Quality owner;
- training or qualification status used to place people safely on work; and
- an improvement action with a responsible owner, approved change and result check.

A conversation, dashboard view or approval signature is not automatically an authored work product. The employer names the required records, the creator, the reviewer and the system of record before publishing a local version of this description.

### Technical methods and systems

- Read the site's current work instructions, specifications, production plan and safety/quality controls before directing work.
- Use the plant's production board, MES/ERP/MRP system, spreadsheet, maintenance system or quality log only to the extent the position has access and a defined task. Confirm data definitions and correct an apparent data error through the approved record process.
- Apply standard work and improvement methods that the employer actually uses. 5S or 6S, 5-Why, root-cause analysis, OEE, takt and line balancing are separate methods or metrics. Generic housekeeping is not proof of 5S; moving an operator is not necessarily formal line balancing; a generic KPI is not OEE.
- Read an output, downtime or scrap measure with its unit, period, product mix and source. A chart can prompt an investigation but does not authorize a staffing move, product release or safety exception.
- Use AI assistance, where the employer permits it, to organize a draft briefing or summarize sanitized information. Verify each suggested fact, hazard, hold, action owner and source record before anyone acts; the authorized human owner retains the decision.

### Observable leadership behavior

- Explain the reason for a priority or reassignment in terms the operator can use.
- Ask the person doing the work what changed before concluding why an output or quality measure moved.
- Give feedback about a specific observed action and the expected next action; invite the employee's account and document only facts appropriate to the process.
- State an unresolved issue at handover with the current restriction, contact, owner and time of the next check.
- Escalate promptly to the named manager, Quality, EHS, Engineering or HR route when authority, safety, product status or an employee matter is uncertain.

## Experience and qualification choices

The employer sets its own **required**, **preferred** and **acceptable-alternative** criteria for this opening. The vacancy research found varied education, manufacturing, supervisory and technical paths; it does not support one universal degree, credential or number of years for both tracks.

**Capabilities to select and verify for this position:** The employer marks each chosen capability as required or preferred and defines the level needed for the selected track.

- ability to understand and follow the site's safety, quality and production instructions for assigned tasks and to identify when affected work must be paused or escalated;
- ability to communicate assigned priorities, task direction, abnormal conditions and handover status clearly where those duties belong to this position;
- ability to read the records, measurements and work instructions the site uses for the assigned area; and
- ability to coordinate with production colleagues and the site's named support functions within local decision boundaries where assigned.

**Employer-set experience route:** state a relevant manufacturing/production background or an expressly accepted equivalent route, including the exact process exposure, years and level only when needed. If the employer accepts one of several routes, write the alternatives with a clear **OR** rather than turning every option into a simultaneous requirement. For a supervisor track, state whether prior formal supervision is required or merely preferred. For a working team-lead track, distinguish production skill and peer guidance from formal people-management experience.

**Potential preferred criteria, only when relevant and genuinely preferred:** prior shift coordination or operator coaching; familiarity with the site's ERP/MES, spreadsheets, quality or maintenance tools; a named Lean/5S or improvement method; experience with the site's sector-specific quality system; or an employer-accepted credential. List an exact credential only if the employer actually wants it. A preferred criterion must not be rewritten as required, and a tool the role uses must not automatically become a prior-experience requirement.

## Work rhythm, cadence and interfaces

**Daily or per-shift work** may include reviewing current plan inputs, confirming qualified coverage, explaining priorities, observing progress, giving feedback, addressing an exception and updating the authorized record. **Cross-shift work** may include an actual handover to an incoming leader; a generic meeting or department pass-down is not the same thing.

**Weekly or monthly work**, when assigned, may include reviewing production and quality patterns, skill coverage, recurring loss, safety observations or improvement actions with the relevant owner. A weekly target period or weekend shift availability does not, by itself, make a task weekly. **Event-driven work** begins when an incident, near miss, product concern, downtime, material shortage or employee issue occurs; the role follows the site's response and escalation route rather than a fixed generic script.

Regular interfaces may include production operators and working leads; the shift manager; Planning and Materials; Maintenance; Engineering; Quality; EHS; and HR. Name the actual function and point of contact for this site. If one team performs several functions, describe its real responsibility rather than copying a generic organization chart.

## Authority and escalation boundaries

The employer's written delegation controls decisions in a real shift. This model separates typical **actions to perform or initiate** from **decisions to refer or approve locally**:

| Perform or initiate within assigned scope | Refer to the authorized decision owner |
| --- | --- |
| Verify plan inputs, communicate priorities and assign work to qualified people when this track has work-direction authority. | Change staffing establishment, overtime approval, role classification or a formal personnel decision when the delegation is not explicit. |
| Record the facts of a hazard, equipment problem, product concern or employee issue and apply the immediate restriction described by site procedure. | Approve product release, disposition, process deviation, restart after a hold or a safety exception unless delegated in writing. |
| Coach, gather facts, recommend support and route an employee concern through the current process. | Make a final hiring, appraisal or disciplinary decision unless the employer specifically assigns it to this position. |
| Propose a line or process improvement with supporting observation and a result check. | Alter controlled work instructions, line balance, equipment settings or quality controls without the required Engineering, Quality, EHS or management approval. |

The position should know **who** accepts each escalation, **what** information that person needs and **how** the team learns the decision. Silence in a vacancy does not grant or deny authority. A working lead may have a narrower route than a direct-report supervisor; local job design must say which.

## Local adaptation checklist

Before publishing this model as an employer's actual job description, complete these decisions with the site's authorized HR, operations, Quality and EHS owners:

- Select **Shift Supervisor** or **Working Team Leader**; state who the role reports to, whether it has formal direct reports and the boundaries of any cross-cover.
- Name the site, production areas, products, shift pattern, physical conditions and controlled work instructions that apply.
- Specify the work-assignment, staffing, overtime, hiring, appraisal and disciplinary decisions actually delegated to the role; identify the approver for each reserved decision.
- Identify the site's stop-work, hazard, near-miss, incident, product-hold, nonconformance, release and restart procedures and the owner of each decision.
- Name the required shift, quality, safety, training and time records; state whether the role creates, maintains, reviews or approves each one and which system is authoritative.
- Choose required and preferred education, experience, technical skills, tools and credentials; preserve accepted **OR** paths and make years/levels explicit where they matter.
- Define the daily, weekly, monthly and event-triggered responsibilities actually assigned, plus the outgoing-to-incoming-shift handover route where applicable.
- Choose measures that fit the site, such as safe completion, quality status, plan attainment, rework or scrap, downtime accuracy, open-action closure and employee skill coverage. Define the data source and review owner; do not use one metric as a proxy for every outcome.
- Check the wording with affected operators and support functions so the final description matches the real job and does not silently transfer specialist approvals to the shift leader.

## Evidence behind the model

The [MTF Institute report on 101 U.S. employer postings](https://mtfinstitute.com/insights/us-manufacturing-shift-supervisor-team-leader-vacancies-2026/) and its exact [archived version](https://doi.org/10.5281/zenodo.23444183) provide the role evidence. The separate [current-changes article](https://mtfinstitute.com/insights/us-manufacturing-shift-leadership-changes-2026/) informs the practical emphasis on checking plan inputs, data quality, human review of AI suggestions, visible skills and hazard follow-through. The vacancy sample includes 95 supervisor-track and six working-lead postings; it is a structured purposive sample of what those advertisements explicitly stated, not a rulebook for every plant. This model uses supported duties and retains local approval questions where source wording cannot establish authority or a universal record.
